Are there any recordings of Curly Chalker before he went to pedals ? A Forum "search" mentions some work with Hank Thompson. Do any song titles come to mind ? Many Thanks. |

I could be wrong, butI believe the only stuff in print is some radio show stuff on Country Routes, available through Amazon.I believe it's called "Songs of the Brazos Valley" or something like that.Curley is on maybe half the stuff. It's got a coupla of the songs that are associated with his early recording career on it,but lots of standards too.Simply stated,it is the best non-pedal playing I have ever heard. |

Did Curly not play on some of Lefty Frezell's recordings with a non pedal steel? Seems I recall "Always Late" as being one. Could be wrong though.
God rest Lefty's and Curley's soul,

There's a very nice CD of Hank's early stuff; it's called "Hank Thompson and his Brazos Valley Boys, Vintage Collections", Capitol Records.
There are 20 cuts. Of those Curley Chalker is on 2 - Wild Side of Life, and How Cold Hearted Can You Get. Other steel players on the CD are Lefty Nason, Pee-Wee Whitewing, Bobbie White, and Bobby Garrett; quite an awesome lineup IMO. I love this CD. The only pedal steel cuts are done by White & Garrett, the rest are non-pedal.
The 2 Curley Chalker cuts are worth the price of the CD, but you'd probably change your mind when you hear the other guys, they're all incredible. |

On the Bear Family label is the Hank Thompson CD Collection that has ALL the lap steel stuff of Curls prior to him being drafted for the Korean War. Jurgen Koop has a booth at Scotty's Convention and will have it! Or call him in Austin! |

Thanks again Guys. I picked up "Sounds of - " as well as "Hank Thompson and The Brazos Vally Boys - Radio Broadcasts 1952" on another Engish label - Flyright Fly CD 948. 16 tunes on the latter with Curly on 7 of them. Incredible stuff. |
