I have a good 4 ohm 200 Watt 12inch Black Widow speaker, and I am thinking of trying it out in my Roland XL80 Watt, is there any reason why it should not be a good match?

Thanks Jimmy.

The reason the Rolands are so good at what they do is that the cabinets are carefully sized to match the speaker they use, using the Thiele-Small parameters. It might sound OK, it might not, but I doubt it would sound better unless you have a cabinet constructed for it. There's all this stuff about standing waves, speaker excursions, reinforcing waves, I don't understand much but think of it as dropping a 426 turbo hemi into your Yugo - it might be a match made in heaven.... Whoa!

I doubt it would fit and would certainly add weight. I had an extra Blue Marvel sitting around and decided to try it for tone comparison. It wouldn't fit in the Roland cabinet. But, the previous post is correct in that the size of the cabinet was engineered for the speaker and other factors to obtain the optimum sound. Kind of goes back to if it ain't broke don't fix it! Jimmy...don't do it unless you have a B/W in a seperate cab.As David said, those cabs are specially designed. I have 2 Cubes, and a 15 inch B/W with a Neo magnet in an empty Nashville 400 cab. I had the amp section installed into a seprate cab. I tried the Cube with the B/W and it did sound good, but no difference that you'd actually notice. Yesterday I used 2 Cubes at a gig. My old Volume pedal is 1 in and 2 outs. What an amazing sound. It was a "VERY LOUD" gig, Rock, Blues, Country, and on the clean channel all I had was the volume on 11 o'clock ...Those Cubes are sooooooo loud!! You'd never believe they were 80 watts as you already know Very Happy

Thanks guys, as I said it was just a thought, I will just keep using it as an extension cab.

The Cube 80XL manual actually reads "8 Ohms or less" for extension speakers.

I experimented with extension cabs for my Cube. The issue was simple, "Volume Control". I wanted to use the extension cab as a "house speaker" and the Cube as my stage monitor. The Cube's volume output is the same for the Cube as an extension Cab. My solution buy another Cube and regulate the volumes independantly of one another based on the application.

As other has stated, works great and plenty of BIG sound when needed.

By "less" ohms does it mean, for example, a 4 ohm or is it referring to a 16 ohm speaker? The term less would seem to mean fewer ohms (< 8 ohms), however, wouldnt that increase the power outlet the speaker sees and possibly "blow" it?

If you add another 8 ohm to the existing 8 ohm wouldn't that give you a 4 ohm load?

A 16 ohm speaker would have more resistance and less likely to cause a problem although the effiency of the amplifier might change.

I am certainly not an electronics guy. What am I missing? I would think the manual should say 8 ohms or greater making the total impedance > 8 ohms.

This was already discussed at length in another thread. The 80XL wants to see a minimum 8 ohm load (and probably, though I'm not sure, 16 ohms max). The external speaker jack puts the external speaker IN SERIES with the internal one, so the total impedance adds. If you have an 8 ohm speaker inside, you can use a 4 or 8 ohm extension speaker.

Thanks Mike, I was thinking the internal and external speaker were in parallel, not series.

I use an 8 ohm Crate GXT 112S w/ a 12 in Celestion speaker for an extenion speaker and it is very well balanced with my 80xl and works and sounds great. Jack
