Hey there, it's nice to be a part of this community. I lurked for several months & finally plunked the $5 registration fee last week - completely worth it, this is a great forum.
I am looking for an extra bit of assistance on deciding on my first pedal steel. I've never played one, but I've played guitar for 17 years, piano for 7, accordion/drums etc. I have a good grip on music theory & feel like learning the steel would be another great part of a lifelong musical journey.
I've been looking at the Simmons S10 for a while, it looks like something I would want, however I can't find any videos or audio of the guitar. Does anyone have a recording of playing on a Simmons that you could share with the forum? I'd really like to get a basic idea of the tone of the instrument.
I spent a lot of time researching the Stage One as well. It looks like a marvelous instrument, but at the end of the day, everything I've heard/watched has led me to decide that the basic tone of the instrument is not what I'm looking for. I'm not trying to bash this instrument & I could be wrong because I haven't played it - it looks wonderful, I strongly considered & may reconsider in the future, but decided against it for now.
I'd like to play a lot of styles on the steel ideally - country, but also western swing, experimental rock styles (mostly in my band) & I've even seen classical music performed on a steel - something I'd like to try.
I've also looked at a few used 12 string steels, but I've read posts that discourage beginners from the instrument. I have a good understanding of music theory, so I don't think the extra strings would be challenging, but perhaps the mechanics (pedals, knees & tuning) would be daunting for a beginner?
Thank you for entertaining my questions, I'm very glad to be a part of this great forum. I hope to eventually find the right steel, learn & perhaps post some of my playing here one day. |

i dont know where you are in NC, but the best thing you could do is go to this:

the newer Simmons steels should be fine to start on. i would go into your first purchase with the realization you are probably going to want something else in a year, so buy something with good resale. _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

Thanks for the reply Jerome, I would love to hear some steel music from great players in NC thanks for sharing the MASGA event, I'm in Durham so it's not too far.
Thanks for the tip on the Simmons steel as well, hoping someone on this forum has an audio file so I can get a sense of the basic tone. |

Michael Douchette plays a Stage One on Virginia Dreams Center Stage on RFD t.v., and it sounds great.
Doug at Stage One will treat you right. Good luck with what ever you choose, and welcome to the Forum. Larry _________________ Mullen G2 SD10 3 & 5 The Eagle

You can hear Michael play a nice intro and steel break using a Stage 1 guitar on Farewell Party with Gene Watson. Go to the archives of woodsongs.com and scroll down to video #626. The song is Gene's ending song on this video. _________________ Dennis
