Numbering Pedal Rods :roll:

Hi there guys,
It may seem like a stupid/odd question and has possibly been addressed before here on the forum many times, but how are your pedal rods numbered??
My SD10 which has three pedals/rods was easy as I just painted the tops, out of sight, red,white and blue to conform with the pedals, but my D10 I just wound a little piece of white numbered tape around each one near to the top.
How are yours numbered?? Rolling Eyes

I have 8 pedals and the rods are numbered with little plastic white bands with stamped black numbers. These bands wrap around the rod near the quick disconnect end. There are slit so can be slipped on and off.
They keep falling off and getting lost BTW and I don't know where to get new ones.

I do it just like you do with a piece of tape (actually, I have a label makes that prints to tape) wrapped around the top of the rod, out of sight. I also take a sharpie pen and try to write it on the bottom of the pedal quick disconnect.

Those little plastic markers are cool, but somehow they break for me. I don't know if it is my foot hitting them when I am playing or it happens when I slide the rods into the leg pouch, but they always break for me.

Stamped-in numbers on pedal rods on my Dekleys. Not all that easy to read but at least they don't get lost Smile

My Mullen guitars have a number nut that screws on the rod just above the connector in place of the standard lock nut. These are classy and I like them the best, but they are a little harder to see in a dim room.

The clips in my first post are like the ones that are on my '81 Zum. They are easier to see. I've only broken one, and they are easily and affordably replaceable from Dave.

I used to do electrical work. I use tape wire markers. Up near the hook. They seem to last forever. The adhesive is very strong, so the markers don't come of wires when pulling them through conduit.
If you have numbers stamped into the rods, fill them with black paint, wipe off the rod, and let dry.

Dave Flanagan sells the little number clips just like the ones that came on my earlier Zums. He posts these for sale here on the Forum.

Fred Justice uses nicely cut notches near the top of the rods, near enough to the "J" hook that they are hidden by the body. They are filled in with black paint so they are easy to see.
I find it to be a simple solution that will last forever.

After you stamp them with a punch, you can run a permanent marker over the number and wipe it off quick, leaving the black marker ink inside the number...Makes it easier to see.

I used to file a series of little notches up near the top (hook) end,,,corresponding to the pedal number,,just deep enough to feel with thumb nail,,,when there is enough light to see, great,,,when not enough light,,just count the notches

As I got older I could no longer read the numbers on my pedal rods in dimly lit situations. I decided to use black electrical wrapped around the rod but staggered the tape so that pedal 1 had tape near the top and pedal 7's tape was at the bottom with the rest in between. Now when I take the rods out of the bag I can tell by the position of the tape where that rod should go.

My MSA U-12 had that. While you can't argue the effectiveness, I didn't like the aesthetic, at least from out front. I think a dot of white paint on the back side only would do the same thing, but remain unobtrusive from crowd-side

All my steels have either a stamped number on the rods or a little number label on the rod end.I went ahead and did as Jim Peters did and wrapped plastic tape in a different position on each rod.It's just easier,and no one has commented in the 20 years I've been doing that.To me,it's a lot like harp players' strings being color coded.YMMV

Buy a new VHS tape, still available most places. There is a sheet of number stickers to index the tape . You might even have some lying around. LJ.

When I had a D-10 and now with SD-10, I put little file nics so I can feel them in dark dance halls etc. Smile

hmmmm in retrospect I may have picked this up from Fred Justice when I played bass with him.
