Topic: Which amp to carry? |

So I have a gig Saturday, in the middle of my workday. I would rather, of course, play the Twin.
But much is made of the frailty of tube amps, and before I get to the gig, there's 600 miles of riding in the cab of a semi.
Should the Twin stay home and the big Peavey make the trip, or are those concerns generally overblown?

I would think the Twin is the more reliable amp to rattle around because its not built onto a circuit board where one bad solder joint can rattle loose
I have put Fender amps through hell and back and they tend to take whatever you can throw at them

TUBES/VALVES aren't that fragile when cold, ran an old fender in the back of a trailer for years, never put a valve in it. I have pulled a Peavey apart many times for dust and reverb 'dry joint' on the circuit boards!
You could just do a POD XT and request a great mix? Soundmen ADORE the mixing

I have a Twin story for you Lane. We went 300 miles or so to get to Grand Forks North Dakota in January of 1975. When we got there and setup my Twin didn't work. One of the power tubes had fallen out. I was scrambling around downton Grand Forks looking for a store with tubes in the middle of winter. I found a hardware store that had them. I don't think you could do that today (find a 6L6 in a hardware store that is).

Peggy - I grew up across the river in East Grand Forks, MN - I'll bet I know the hardware store you're talking about and there were probably 2 more stores where you could have found that tube. Not including the amateur TV repair guys who worked out of their basements.
Want to have some real fun? Try finding a power tube for an Ampeg Porta-Flex bass amp in Fort Francis, Ontario in January back in 1978.

Perhaps a T-shirt or two in the back of the amp to cushion falling tubes, then?

It's a KW T-600. No room, unless one of them wants to drive.
I like the T6 almost as much as I like multieffects units.

Hey Thomas. I had it ez I'm sure. Just the shock of the amp being busted on arrival at the club.
In GF one of the fans took us to a nursing home to visit folks. My first experience with advanced stage Parkinsons. A heart wrenching day. But unforgettable as well.

| I install good spring tube retainers in Fender amps with inverted tubes - they're one helluva lot more reliable afterwards. And yeah... I vote for the Twin. |

Good choice, too. but there was a weirdness early in the speaker: it had a cappuccino maker roar that I could make happen by tapping the magnet, but then it went away.
One great tone monster, and it's damn sure green

600 Miles is too far to go back.....Take them both...
I always bring a guitar processor and a set of headphones, if I cant bring a backup on a distant gig.....Last resort...Processor+In-Ears, sent to the board...
JMHO
Most noise in Fender/Mesa amps is preamp tube #1....

... depending on the channel, that could be V2 also. Looking in the back, count from the right... first two tubes do Normal, then Reverb channel. Today's Tip: for more headroom/punch, unplug the channel tube you're not using, you'll get more B+ voltage on the remaining tube. Another tip: you can swap all the 7025/12AX7's around for lowest noise/least microphonics/best tone... as Mickey said, it's the first one in the chain that's most sensitive, it gets amplified the most.

I wouldn't carry either of them. I assume you have a passenger seat in your rig. Take the little lady along to CARRY them for you.
