OK, so I have a Sparkle on the way, and it should arrive just in time to gig. How would you set it to
A (preferred option): get a hippie-creamy fuzz, hopefully close to 1:05-1:20 of Buddy C?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shgQ3-OGmu4 or
B: Some other hard rockin' fuzz?
(Actually it should beat me home, but I'm throwing my stuff in the semi and playing a gig on my Saturday dinner break)

Great pedal! I think it works best as a subtle overdrive or even a clean boost though.

Paul, it HAS a knob labeled "Tone," does that not mean tone? See http://www.voodoolab.com/sparkledrive.htm
Unfortunately, the website doesn't say how to set it for "Texas Style," but http://www.voodoolab.com/audio/SparkleDrive_TexanStyle.mp3 certainly gets near the mark.

Yes, that is a tone knob, Lane. Really easy pedal to get nice sounds out of. What your looking for is right there. Won't take long to find it. The hippie creamy thing or a nice Texas blues kinda tone. For either one, I'd probably crank the tone knob all the way to the right, then find the right mix of clean and dirty that you're looking for. It's on the way, so I hope you do get it in time to mess around with it a little before your gig. Smile

It'll probably arrive Friday, but I won't pick it up til Saturday morning: then I put my gear in the semi and drive 500 miles and the gig is a third of the way back from the farthest point (but still on the route). If I'm lucky, I'll get 20 minutes.
But that's a good starting point.

What Todd said is true to my experience as well. Should take you 5 minutes to get her dialed in. All you have to tweak is gain and clean...the tone should be cranked to the right and the volume you'll probably want to match your volume sans sparkle.

There are three kinds of chips in the world: the 4558/Tube Screamie chip, the 308/Rat/BossOD/DOD chip - and everything else. Your soon-to-be is a 4558, you'll be just fine. Isn't "Creamy Hippie Fuzz" about attitude & altitude anyway? Very Happy

Lane I use a Sparkle Drive on a regular basis..

here is where I start and my take...

Gain > I set to around 2 O'Clock..and leave it there..this is my max gain setting..

Tone > I do leave at center but now and then may shift it a tad bright

Clean > this is the power of this gadget I swap between 12:00 ( pretty clean ) and maybe 8 or 9:00 for drive.. This is the knob that will give you the clean to drive setting..Clean being higher on the knob 12, 1 , 2 O'Clock..
the lower the setting..9,8,7 O'Clock gives you the drive you set with the gain...

Volume > this is obviously your pedal output when "stomped"
this knob can take you to mild..can't hear you , to..turn that dang thing down ! 12 O'Clock is probably my starting point then adjusted based on where my level needs to be...

I happen to think the Sparkle drive is a great pedal, wouldn't think of playing without one...

good luck

t

PS..you didn't ask but I'm tellin' you anyway, this is the ONLY drive pedal in my pedal bd. now...., this with the Telecaster and the Twin Reverb..well...it's pretty freakin' hippie good !

I stand corrected. I'm sorry for any confusion this caused. I don't know what I was thinking.
I'll check my facts before I make a fool of myself again. (I hope...)

Question for all the Sparkle users in this thread...do you use it for pedal steel? Six string? Both?

I only recently got a Tele. I prefer the classic clean Twangin' Tele, like Albert Lee/Ray Flacke/Roy N.
When I hear Brad Paisley or Brent Mason playing those licks "with hair on 'em," my internal thought is "damn, it's a shame them boys can't afford an amp that'll stay clean."
Or "...with drums and rock and roll guitars mixed right up in your face..."
I suppose I might use it on a tune or two on tele, but I got it for 3-5 tunes a night of steel.
