| Hi guys, I am real new to lapsteel, and need some help. I can't seem to find much on 8 string instruction(licks, intros. or turnarounds.) I have some basic knowledge of guitar, but VERY limited on lap. Anything you can suggest, would help. Thanks. |

Hi Curt, my dad was from Alma.
Frankly, I don't know of much on 8 string. If you play the A6th tuning or C6th, Herb Remington has some tab material out (see the Forum Links). Jerry Byrd's instruction and tabs have a little on 7 & 8 string, but it's predominantly 6 string. Scotty's lap steel book is good but also 6 string.
You didn't say what tuning(s) you were using. Maybe it would help others to guide you if you posted it. The type of music you're playing would also be useful to know; for example if Hawaiian, you may be able to find more.

Curt, the Herb Remington & Cindy Cashdollar stuff is good, but both are western swing, not pop. But they're still good.
It's frustrating to not be able to come up with something. Closest I can come is the Basic C6th Nonpedal Lap Steel Method, by DeWitt Scott (a Mel Bay book + CD) for $19.95. It's not exactly what you're looking for but may get you started at least.
First, it's 6 string, low to high CEGACE, which is the nucleus C6th tuning. Second, it only works with music in the public domain, some old stuff like On Top of Old Smoky. It does have both tab and music. Maybe you could extrapolate up to your high G & low A.
There's an excellent course by Jerry Byrd, but it deals with lots of tunings, is fairly expensive, and doesn't really address many pop tunes. He treats mostly 6 string tunings but extends the C6th to 7 & 8 strings near the end; really the C6th/A7th tuning.
I know it's not exactly what you want, but maybe somebody else will post an idea.
