Here I am, light snow coming down in Western Ohio, listening to a few of my favorite
Texas based musicians, when this steel player backing Tony Booth, rips one off. At first I thought,
I'll never be able to do that. It was smokin from top to bottom and in between.
But then, as I listened to the lick several times, it came to me. He's just playing a scale,
albeit fast, it is just a scale run. So I tabbed it out as best I could and this is what I came up with.
First the scale:
1_______________________5____________________________
2_________________5D_________________________________
3____________________________________________________
4____________________5______________________________
5___________5_5A____________________________________
6______5_5B__________________________________________
7____5______________________________________________
8__5_________________________________________________
9____________________________________________________
10___________________________________________________
Though not tabbed exactly as played, close enough for me to get some use out of it.

6__5-5B_______5-5B_________________________________
7_______5___5______________________________________
8_________5________________________________________

How I've broken it down as practice exercises for myself:

|
|
Start with this:
1____________________________5_____________________
2_______________________5D_________________________
3__________________________________________________
4__________________________5_______5_______________
5__________________5-5A_________5A_________________
6__5-5B_______5-5B_________________________________
7_______5___5______________________________________
8_________5________________________________________
9__________________________________________________
10_________________________________________________
Followed by this:
1__________________________________________________
2__________________________________________________
3__________________________________________________
4_________________________5________________________
5__3A____3A__4A____4A-5A_____5A-5__________________
6_____3B________4B-----4B__________5B______________
7__________________________________________________
8__________________________________________________
9__________________________________________________
10_________________________________________________
And then this: Play each 4 notes very quickly...
1__________________________________________________
2__________________________________________________
3___________1___1_____2___2____3~~_________________
4__3___3___________________________________________
5_____________1___1_____2___2__3~~_________________
6____3___3_________________________________________
7__________________________________________________
8__________________________________________________
9__________________________________________________
10_________________________________________________
That leads right into a C chord, pedals down at the 3rd fret.
That last passage, I'm still working on myself. I know a guitar player
that makes that look really, easy at a blistering speed. |

These are excellent fills, and the kind I look for but seem to always elude me--thanks for all the tabs you've posted. I've actually printed out most of your Beginner Notes and added them to my book of tricks. _________________ Mullen G2; Fender Tone Master Twin Reverb; Goodrich L-120 |

I appreaciate you gentalmen following my wanderings.
In my opinion, I think every player needs to be writing their own fills/song, bits and pieces. But not necessarily in tab form. It could be in any form you could go back to and make sense of. That said, my reasoning is two fold. One: Fleeting thoughts of genious are quickly lost(Hahaha. I can't believe I said that). Two: You have a written record of where you've been, where you are and where you need to go. My tabs, for the most part are original thoughts. Not always, but mostly. I believe the reason they show similarity to others writings, is because I, as they, have and do study the same things. Scales, parts of scales, and their every form. Harmonized, ect. This does something. It allows the player to listen to a passage, hear its point of origin and point of ending and every nuance in between and play something similar, but not the same. I'm not real good at this yet, but I'm getting better. Tab is very limited. I can generally tell you what I want you to know through tab, but I can not specifically tell you what I was thinking. Timing, feel, is for the most part lost. Listen to something or read a tab and think of it as a trigger, one that will spawn original thoughts. When that happens, write them down, or record them in some other form. They are yours, a part of you. And they are fleeting... |
