Topic: .011 string breakage? |

I started using the GHS .011PG for my third string a few years ago and have never broken one. I decided to leave it on see how long it would last. This last weekend it broke, after 15 gigs. They also make a .017PG string. Anybody breaking strings should try them, Bob sells them here on the forum. The PG is different from their regular string, so don't confuse them.

| I used to use the .011 like you mentioned but moved up to the 11.5R and hadn't broke one in nearly 5 years. I used the .012R for a while also but the .012 to me, didn't quite have the bite of the .011 or 11.5 |

I use GHS .011's and usually get 2-3 months on them
before I change the set. Last week my 3rd string broke
and I thought I'd try a Jagwire .012. It was a bad idea.
I got half was thru the first song and it broke half way
between tuner and the roller. Usually all strings break
at the changer. I put a GHS back on and no problem.

Doug and Billie, to those of us who don't know, and I hope I'm not the only one, what does PG and R stand for and what are the advantages and dis-advantages.?

Some string suppliers offer special strings for the 3rd and 5th E9 strings. These are designated by PG=Pedal Guitar, and R=Reinforced. They are designed to give longer life. The idea is to help prevent unexpected failures.
Some differences from ordinary strings may be shorter twists at the ball end and special treatment and/or alloy combinations.
I use them whenever I can get them and they do help.

My GHS strings are labeled (Professional) PF500 set.
So I think PG woulg mean Professional Grade and the
R would be for Regular Grade.

Hey Doug, that's a lot of gigs ! This is good info on the .011.
I generally change the 3 and 5 after 4 or 5 gigs... don't want to go to the last minute ! I use many different brands of .011 ( supposedly Steel guitar strings) and I have found them all to be about equal in life for me, by changing the two strings every 4,5 or 6 gigs I can't recall breaking a string on a gig in a very long time....

i have used GHS.boomers about 25 or so years.i have went as long as 5 to 6 weeks and not break a string.i tryed others over the years and all ways ended up back to GHS.even used the reinforced end ones and found they didn't last much longer than the regular 011.for me i tried other brands and found GHS.sounded as good as the rest. sound wise and breakage wise. so i'll stay with them for another 25yrs and then will see if theres something better out there. just my opinion  |

| I've been gigging nearly every weekend for 6 months with my GFI and have not broken a string. This is impressive to me and a bit perplexing as the GFI does not have moveable rollers at the nut. The strings ride over a stationary polished bar. I'm really liking this guitar. Oh, and I know, I know... I've ordered a new set. I know it's time! |
