I've found myself really appreciating humbucking pickups lately, mostly when playing around old light dimmers, old wiring, etc. I've noticed that Dimarzio has started making 8-string so-called "PAF"s. Has anyone tried one?

What I'm discovering from my similar experiments in 6-string is that 'blade' pickups often have a radius on the blade(s)... this messes with our flat stringing, in that the outer strings, especially the highest one, is shortchanged a little bit. If the 'PAF' has the normal adjustable pole-pieces then I'd say go for it... there's no doubt that having a humbucker is worth it, especially if you're dialing in a little drive/grind. Beer signs etc are not your friend! _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

From what I've been able to find these pickups have just been announced at NAMM, so nobody will have had them available to install in a lap steel yet.
They do have the adjustable pole pieces Stephen talks about. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

They're starting to show up already on eBay. The PAFs, I mean. As I recall both 8-string Dimarzios have adjustable polepieces. And yes, that's essential for me also. The high string often is a little lacking on my steels. (Sometimes I resort to sticking a tiny neodymium magnet to non-adjustable pickups under a weak string.) |
