been reading the good reviews on the Cubes - i've been looking at some form of modeling amp for small gigs - i play non-pedal in a mostly acoustic band (no big drum sets) and am wondering about your opinions on which of these might be best.
currently have a great older Polytone Mini-Brute i usually take, but its kind of sterile for the steel, kind of a 1 sound deal. would you think since i already have a small amp, just going with the new Pod X3 or the Cube 40xl (i dont need the 80w) _________________ '65 Sho-Bud D-10 Permanent • '54 Fender Dual-8 • Clinesmith T-8 • '38 Ric Bakelite • '92 Emmons D-10 Legrande II |

Here's half a reply as I only know the Roland 40XL.
I am really impressed with this amp. It has a fantastic 'clean' sound and 4 switchable pre-set sounds in total. It has on-board effects, including a great sounding delay, 2 types of reverb, a variety of amp 'tones' (the Blackface works really well with psg) has a 'power squeezer' for quieter home playing and seems plenty loud enough for the kind of gigs you describe. The tone controls really work! Fine adjustments to tone are easily discernible. A fantastic amp, well worth the money (and, if you are in the USA, considerably cheaper than we pay here in the UK) - and still a bargain in my opinion. Maybe someone can chip in with a comment about your alternative amp but the Roland is great. You would also probably have a 28 day 'returns' option if you buy from a reputable store - but you'll love it and want to keep it! It improved my sound enormously - my only complaint is it didn't improve my playing! More practise needed! _________________ Ben-Rom #017 'Lorelei', Guild D25, Epiphone 'Joe Pass', Roland 40XL, Hilton VP

I have a 30X, the precursor to the 40XL, and I like it quite a bit. I play it at mostly at home but I have done a gig or two with it. I often throw it in the car as a spare in case my main amp quits. |
