Hi Craig,
I like this guit. A few quick questions.
Why does so much bearing surface show at the rear of the cross shafts ? Is the center of the cross shafts supported where they are rounded off? What year is this? How much cabinet drop? And finally, does the changer have split screws? Thanx, Ron

Ron, not sure why bearing surface shows. the center of the cross shaft is supported by what i believe to be a teflon bushing. the round part of the shaft is where the bushing rides.I have found almost zero cabinet drop. It does have split screws on all strings. Not sure of the year. I bought it from Gary last year at Dallas show.I am the first owner.

Ron, I believe what you are seeing as bearing surface showing is the spring loaded dowels. It appears to me that Gary has slightly shortened the cross shafts and used longer dowels to make removal of the cross shafts much easier. There is enough dowel exposed that needle nose pliers can be used to retract the spring loaded dowel into the cross shaft which makes it simple to remove the cross shaft. Rains, Emmons and Derby use the spring loaded dowel method to install the cross shafts and in most cases the cross shaft is next to impossible to remove. I believe it is very good to be able to remove the cross shaft in order to properly service the guitar. Over time the apron bushing gums up and the cross shaft then turns on the dowel instead of the dowel turning in the bushing, then some gumming up occurs inside the cross shaft then the cross shaft no longer rotates freely. I am working on a guitar right now that I had to cut the dowels in order to remove the cross shafts in order to correct sluggish cross shaft rotation. I think the exposed dowel is a very good idea.

Thank you Craig, I have to sell my Refurbed Shobud (Now SD 10) to afford your guitar. Is that a BL705 Pick up ? Also, 3 raises and 2, or 3 lowers ?

Jerry , thank you also. Sounds like a good idea. I was curious how you got the crosshafts out of some guitars. RP
