Topic: Beard model R value? |

My buddy has one which he bought new at least 7 years ago costing over $2,000 with a nice case. It has a bad scratch from his belt buckle. It hasn't been played much at all. I offered $1200 but he wants more. I need some advice as to the value as I do want it.

For what it's worth, I saw one on the local San Francisco Bay Area craigslist offered for $2000 as well. I didn't play or see the instrument myself, but the photos looked good.
You can get a new Beard Vintage R from Gryphon Strings in Palo Alto for $2000, so I'd guess his used instrument with a scratch will be worth less than that.
I'd have to see photos of the instrument (especially the scratch) to see how much that will devalue the instrument.

The mahogany R has retailed for $2,700 for as long as I can remember. Good used examples are usually priced around $1,800-2,000. Can't comment on the specific guitar without a photo. Also consider budgeting a setup if the guitar is 7 years old.
Also for $2,000 new/retail is the most excellent "Gen 2" Vintage R. The new cosmetics make a great guitar even better imo.
Ron, is this an "R" or a "Vintage R"?

| I have a Beard R Mahogany and purchased it used for $2000. Mine was in totally brand new condition. The person who had it sold it right after he bought it. Just wasn't for him. Let me tell you, it is an amaaaazing instrument. Build quality, tone, looks, all off the charts. I would never ever sell mine. A Strativarius. I use it in my scoring work for a bunch of TV shows. It's all over Duck Dynasty, Cajun Pawn Star and other shows. I keep it tuned to open D a lot of the time because I play a lot of swampy, bluesy music with it. Outstanding for that. Love this instrument. Yea, $1200 is too low for an instrument of this quality. With a real bad scratch I would think $1600 or $1700. |

He said $2000 firm today. I could live with the scratch. If I decided to get it repaired, could a luthier do it? It may need a set up as Howard suggested. How much would that cost? Would it have to back to the factory for that?

Depends on the scratch and if you need the guitar to be cosmetically perfect. If a finish scratch I'd be tempted to leave it. If bare wood is exposed then I would do just enough to protect the guitar.
I think a setup from Paul runs about $225 (haven't looked on the website) that'll include one of his new cones. Factor in shipping both ways and you are probably in the neighborhood of $350. Seeing you are in NJ you could schedule time for a shop visit, save on shipping and get the grand tour besides.
I'd personally favor sending the guitar to Paul vs. anyone else. Who knows the guitar better then the man that built it?

Learn to live with the scratch. Marks and such from playing wear are simply that guitar's encounter with life. I can also tell you from experience that undisputable marks on stolen guitars make them much easier to identify. I recently met a guy with an $8000 Scheerhorn who wouldn't play it for fear of srtaching it.....what's the point?

| I agree with Howard, make it a day trip to Hagerstown, Md. and get the tour. When I lived in Bergen County (presently in Sussex now) it took about 4 hrs. each way. From Metuchen, it's probably a 3 1/2 hr. trip. |

i wouldnt sweat it - its such a good time to be a buyer and there is no sense paying full used retail for something like this...unless this is REALLY what you want and nothing else...i've found that "deals of a lifetime" usually come around about twice a year. so have the cash ready.
you'll find something and be glad you waited.
