Sometime back there were several post on where to put effects units, before or after the volume control, delay before reverb if you use both, reverb before delay and so own, cant seem to find it, any one know where, thanks.

Hi Ray, I think it depends a lot on which amp and FX
unit your using. If the amp has Send and Return on it,
and you'll use a FX unit like a Boss RV-3, RV-7, DD-20
or simular, I think you'll get the best sound there.

I think it can be highly subjective, and if you try different orders you will hear different things. In generaI I have been told this as a starting point:
Filters [wah, envelopes]
Compression
Distortion/Overdrive
Modulators [chorus, flange, phase, trem]
Reverb/Delay
Where you stick volume is important, try it in various places.
I run PSG into Black Box, Volume, A+B selector [the other channel being six-string] into amp. Then the effects loop from the amp contains Wah/Trem/Delay. This is the cleanest tone I have found for my gear. |

Distortion / Compression before or after the volume pedal makes a big difference but the rest not so much.
Distortion before in my book.

If I do use any outboard effects i go from amp input to volume pedal output then from pedal input to effects output then effects input to my guitar or steel output Works great for me and it acts as a noise gate.
Most of the time I use my Roland 80LX on-board effects but when I use my other amp and I use separate effects i set up as below
compressor/chorus/delay and tuner.

| Gain-based effects(distortion,compression,etc.) go into the front of your amp;time-based effects (delay,chorus,etc.) go in the effects loop.When I'm using an amp that has no effects loop,I go from the guitar to gain-based effects to time based effects to the volume pedal to the amp.YMMV. |

Look at it like if you have a 6 string guitar with a volume pedal after the effects.
If you turn the volume down on the guitar it will cut the gain to the distortion or compressor and you will get less distortion aka cleaner sound.
If you turn the volume pedal down after the effects you will get full distortion at a lower volume..
This is a big deal if you are trying to get fuzzy steel guitar.
Many times the amp or fuzz is too loud and when you back the volume pedal off the fuzz effect is diminished.
