I hope i'm in the right place to ask this question.
I only play once a week any more but I play bass and was wondering if there's any new bass strings out there that I could try. I have usually used fender but I noticed there are a lot of new ones out there that maybe I should try. I haven't been on the forum for a long time and u probably don't remember me. The highlight of my career is when Phil Baugh and I went to work for my hero Ray Price in 1970. I'm not trying to bragg but I sure am proud of it. If anyone has any suggestions I would sure appreciate it.Thanks guys, An old music lover, db

Hey Dale, I'd have to disagree with you on the highlight of your career. I remember when you and Phil went to work with Price but never got to hear you in that band so I'd have to stick with the Red Barrel group with you, Al Bruno, Archie and Carl West or was it Jay Dee. That was the tightest group L.A. ever had......... As far as bass strings, I do some bass gigs now and then and on my P-Bass I always use the black nylon wrapped ones that Fender makes. You usually have to order them but I think they're worth it. I hate the round wound bass strings.........JH in Va.

Good to hear you are still around and kicking. I remember very well the good old Red Barrel days in glorious Hawaiian Gardens, Ca. I think Carl West was your Steel Player. I used to work with Jack Tucker on some of the Sunday afternoon gigs. You always had a great Band !

Jerry and Billy, you guys are absolutly right. I have have had so many highlites in my music I can't really name a special one. When Wynn Stewart helped get me in Georges Roundup #2 it was all up hill. with Carl West, Cecil Bays and all, got to do the Cal Worthington tv show. Thanks to Al Bruno our band the individuals we got to work with Dick Clark,got to travel with Ray Price, I recorded a couple little old records. For a guy who (was not) a good musician and never was a star, I got to work with the best of them and still getting to to do it . I will turn 78 the 30th of Nov, God had been so good to me. I still want to know about some good new bass strngs. Ha, Love you all. db

I recall interviewing a chap from Wisconsin who recorded with rock bands and moved to LA to play the Valley clubs and focus on a record deal in the mid 1960s.
The Valley clubs were a mix of country, rock and lounge gigs, some venues had all of the above (Lazy X) and he told me that Inman's band at the Red Barrel was the only country band he saw where the bassist knew what the hell he was doing!

in the earlier years most Club Bands carried five or six pieces and usually had pretty good BASS Players. When times got tougher and the Bands were cut down to four pieces the Band Leaders, who had been playing just rythm guitar, started to try to play BASS. This resulted these new BASS p;ayers who had idea what the function of the BASS was resullting in some horrible BASS playing.

Leo: You are absolutely right. They were personalities who could draw a crowd. Jack helped me to get through College, playing at night and falling asleep in class in the daytime !
Dale's original post really took q left turn. Dale is a great Bass player, Singer, and Band Leader. Any sideman would be lucky to work with him.

| Billy,Thanks for the reply.You can't buy the on stage program school that those (Jack Tucker & Sammy La Master) two have givin',let alone the criteria that came with the free on job learning quality in general a rotation of styles of Country Music that they did even tho stey couldn't play it on the bass,but,could sure sing the fire it out them. Gene Davis,Danny Micheals,Billy Mize,Larry Settle,Tommy Gobel,Tony & Larry Booth,Eddy Drake and so many others were true Traditional Country music neighborhood Artists. Will never see them days again on this earth in our life time unless some old dogs like myself can crake the ice with New Young Heads in Nashville,Los Angeles,New York and everywhere else in this world.
