Why don't console steels have removable lids ?
A lid would keep the instrument from getting dirty or damaged, and keep the strings from deteriorating.
I once built a hammered dulcimer with a lid, and it never gets dusty. |

I have some neat Meican faux Navajo rugs I use on my pedal and console lap steels. They work fine. - Jack _________________ Jack Aldrich

I started using them back in the 70's and 80's, when I was playing full time. I'd just throw a rug/blanket (really a saddle blanket) over the steel at closing time, and I'd pull it off when I came in the next night. I never had a problem with people screwing around with the steel when I was gone. I still have one of my old rugs on my D10 Carter down in my music room and on my D8 Stringmaster upstairs. - Jack _________________ Jack Aldrich

Isn't that what a custom ordered steel guitar cover does? |

I use a bath towel. I did suggest Mrs. Baker run a duster over it twice a week. Now I use a bath towel. |

I use the fender covers you can get for working on cars-
They are the perfect size, and they are made of a soft material that will not scratch your instrument. |

All my pedal steels are covered by Bobby Seymore's covers, but they wouldn't have to be if covers had been a part of the design. |

Multi-Kords all had them on hinges, over both the changer and the key head. You could get them special order in several different colors, including some that were transparent fluorescent both green & orange as I recall.
Their double neck Multi-Kords ware non pedal on the front neck, but they had lids on both ends on both necks anyway.
Jay Harlin's personal 15 pedal Multi-Kord had a yellow mother of pearl body with orange fluorescent lids on hinges, that glowed under blacklight when the Harlin Brothers put on their Hawaiian shows, Hula dancers and all. They were quite stylish in their day.
That guitar was built on a permanent chrome tubing frame with locking wheels.
I have been with them at the old Manuel Training High school auditorium in Indianapolis Ind. when they did that. |
