Hi, guys ... for the second time in a couple of weeks, I just got tons of rejected emails in my inbox that were "undeliverable". These are all emails that I never sent, but the scary part of this is that the sending email address is my own!  Whatever these emails are, they seem to each have some stupid website link in them (but I won't open the links ... no telling what they're to).
I've just changed my password as well as security questions in Yahoo, so hopefully, if this is an email hi-jacking, it won't happen again and I've also forwarded the suspect emails to Yahoo's TOS department with a report of what's going on.
Anyway, if anyone gets a crazy or suspect looking email that seems to be coming from my email address, please delete it. Thanks.

Jim,
Most email viruses these days spoof the From: portion of the email and usually use a computer infected with a virus to grab random From:'s out of an address book. Someone who has you in their address book may have been infected with a virus and now you are reaping the "benefits".
Check your sent mail in Yahoo and see of any of those mails actually came from your account. If not, it is likely your address was used as a forged From: address and now you are getting the undeliverable messages.
If they are in your sent mail, and since you have changed passwords etc, I would suggest you scan your computer for a virus. If a virus is found, after removing it, you will need to go through the password changing again.

Thanks, Andy ... I've checked my sent folder and there's not a single one of those suspect emails there. Only thing in my sent folder are actual real emails that I've sent to family members and a few friends. As a precaution, I ran a virus scan and happy to report there are no viruses.
It must be one of those "forging" cases you mentioned. That's kind of scary that someone can forge another person's email address for the "from" line and send emails where it appears to be coming from the forged email address.
Is there any way to prevent people from being able to do that (other than deleting that email address and creating a new one)?

Unfortunately you can't stop someone from forging the from address with your actual email address. Providers can block delivery of those emails by using SPF records and a lot of the larger providers such as yahoo, hotmail, gmail etc do just that but it doesn't stop you from getting all of those goofy bounce messages 
Luckily, it sounds like your address was just used as a from address and nothing more serious! |

Jim, I am sure that your email address has been hacked. Just under an hour ago, I received an email from your address, wanting me to click on a link to Dubai real estate deals

| something's been up with yahoo. It seems someone's been targeting yahoo groups. Same thing has happened to quite a few people I know online and the common thread is people that communicate with others who are part of a Yahoo Group, or are Yahoo Group members themselves. Good thing is that it is annoying, but relatively harmless once you get it resolved. |

Well, it sure is annoying to suddenly find weird things going on with email.
Dubai real estate, huh? Nope, never a request to copy anything into a browser, but there was one thing that did happen about a month ago ... got an email from Yahoo saying that they were revising some servers or something and deleting or deactivating seldom used email accounts and I had to click on a link to "verify" my email account to keep it active. I wonder if that might have been (as Yahoo official looking as it was) some sort of source for this recent email issue?

Sounds like a phishing scam to me, Jim. I get requests to be "mystery shopper" for my Internet provider all the time. Funny thing, my Internet provider's mail program sends them to spam, but doesn't block them.

Happened to me with my Yahoo account. I don't believe I ever joined any Yahoo groups. I received hundreds of them over the span of a week or so. And, mine were all sent to hotmail accounts and came to me as undeliverable. Not one address I recognized.

I heard back from Yahoo support and it looks like I got phished by someone. They merely suggested I change my password (which I've already done) and that should solve the issue.

Unfortunately, changing your password after you've been phished is a bit like closing the stable door after the horse haa bolted. They've already gotten in, copied your address list, and they can use it as many times as they like even after you've changed your password. 
Sometimes they even sell your address list to third parties. There's a big trade in passwords and identities.  |
