This is an interesting and beautiful creation by the legendary Herb Remington.
It was crafted as a 10/8 but in my opinion the necks are rather close together
to effectively use it that way so I believe it's best described as a double 8.
You can see in the photos (from the original owner, used with permission),
the two tuners that conflict with each other.
You can see my remedy for this which was to get an extra tuner button
and file a notch in it to clear the other tuner. It is useable this way but you
can't use a peg winder when restringing. I think it would be best to remove
the high string and tuner from the lower neck altogether and use it as
either an 8 or 9 string neck.
There are extra tuners and buttons included, as well as a second bridge and
nut to change the string spacing. I never gigged with this steel and am only
giving it up to pursue a D10 pedal steel.
It is truly a beautiful looking and sounding steel. Case, 4 legs, and leg bag are
also included.
I am asking $1000 including UPS insured ground shipping to the continental US.
For sale in the US only. Alaska and Hawaii will cost extra for shipping.
I can be reached by PM for details.

What is the string spacing on this guitar, and what spacing options would the spare parts allow?
Thanks |

The current string spacing at the bridge is 3/8" between strings on both necks.
The additional bridge for the 10 string neck brings that down to a hair under 11/32" for the 10 string neck.
Here are the raw numbers:
TOP NECK (8-string):
Bridge total string width, center-to-center is 2.625"
This gives a string-to-string spacing of .375" or 3/8"
Nut total string width center-to-center is 2.175"
This gives a string-to-string width of .310", or about 5/16"
BOTTOM NECK, CURRENT SPACING (10 string):
Bridge total string width, center-to-center is 3.375"
This gives a string-to-string spacing of .375", or 3/8"
Nut total string width center-to-center is 2.775"
This gives a string-to-string spacing of .310" or around 5/16"
BOTTOM NECK, AUXILLIARY SPACING (10 string):
Bridge total string width, center-to-center is 3.00"
This gives a string-to-string spacing of .333", or
just under 11/32"
Nut total string width center-to-center is 2.50"
This gives a string-to-string spacing of .277" or just under 9/32" |

You should be able to get Herb or a machinist to make you a 8 string nut and bridge with the same string spacing as the standard 8 string neck. These guitars have a fairly narrow string spacing similar to a pedal steel. _________________ Georgeboards D8 Twin Princess, Fender Custom T8, Fender Stringmaster T8, Pre-war Rickenbacher 7string bakelite, Clinesmith D8 pedal steel, Clinesmith T8 non pedal steel, Simmons Genesis PSG, Simmons D10 psg, Peavey NV 112, Fender 65Princeton Reverb, Roland Cube |

I agree that the auxilliary bridge and nut have
spacing similar to a pedal steel,
but the current spacing on both necks is
almost identical to that of my 8 string
Fender Stringmaster and other lap steels
I've owned.
I would imagine that Herb could make parts
for any spacing desired. If the outer 2
strings were removed from the lower neck
it would result in an 8 string neck with
normal 3/8" spacing. This is what I
would recommend but it is useable as a 9 or
10 string neck as well, given the constraint
at the tuner end that I detailed above. |

I would also be interested in trades
for this guitar. Some kind of pedal
steel or perhaps a single 8 lap steel, amp,
preamp, whatever.
Please PM me with details of what you have.
Thanks.

Thanks for all the interest shown in this.
No takers yet so I've lowered the price to $1000.
This is a great deal on a classic steel! |

I have also listed this item on ebay.
Any prior sale there would obviously
have to take precedence over any offers
received here, but if I accept an offer
via the forum then I will first pull
the ebay listing so that there is no
potential conflict.
I will do my best to respond as timely as
possible to all posts or PM's.
If you are a forum member and wish to
purchase it I would appreciate it if
we could conduct our business via the
forum to avoid paying double fees.
Thanks. |
