Hal has been kind enough to send me several tapes of his Dick McIntire collection, which are absolutely wonderful, and he has agreed that we should spread the Dick McIntire sound. So, in that spirit I am in the process of digitizing the tapes I have, which amount to about 6 hours of music.
Here is a link to sides A and B of Tape 3 --I can only do one side at a time here, so be patient. Patience is almost a lost virtue anyway.
So, a big thank you to Hal!

A big thank you to BOTH of you Mike and Hal! I am just listening now...I love it when those guys included traditional percussion in the mix. Really great stuff!

Mike - thanks so much for all your efforts at reviving the steel guitar and it's history. I've been slowly going through some archived threads over at the old form and am really starting to open my ears to the early stuff - its great!
I've got it playing all day at work and people pass by and say what in the world is up with all this Hawaiian music ( remember, I'm in NC) - I say it's just fun to listen to - you can't listen to this stuff and be stressed out.

I thought some of you might also appreciate this video on the 75th birthday of Dick's niece, Al's daughter Lani (named after Al and Dick's brother).
Hal told me she was a dancer in Lani McIntire's band.
Hal shared with me that he met Dick's grandson in Hawaii and, sadly, he knew nothing of steel guitar.

Are you going to keep the naming convention consistent?
E.g. the MP3 download could be called, McIntire_Tape14sideA.mp3,
however it is now called McIntire_Tape1sideA.mp3 and not Tape 14.  |

Mike - What a Christmas present! Until now, just about the only place you could find any of this material (if at all) was through Cumquat Records, and now that's in doubt. As one who has recently begun seriously studying Hawaiian guitar, with John Ely (a big Dick McIntire fan), this is a treasure trove. Waiting for the rest will be a delicious drip, drip, drip...Thanks,

I have added Side B of the tape, which contains some real beauties sung by Ray Kinney.
So, for now we have about 90 minutes of Dick McIntire!
Just go back to the original link--they are both there.
Peter, I can't change the tag on the file at this point. I didn't realize it was Hal's tape 14 unttil just 2 days ago, so I will have to come up with some kind of convention.

Dick Mcintire, Mr. Smooth. He must have influenced many Steel Players.
Qustion: there is a lick I call the Hwaian Lick which is used in many Hawaiian recordings either as a "Fill" or a "Tag"between choruses and endings. Where did this lick first fome from, and is anyone credited with it ?

That's called the "Hawaiian turnaround" or "vamp" and as far as I know it originated with Sonny Cunha, who was a very early composer of Hapa Haole songs.

Mike, just quickly, there seem to be 16 songs on side A, but only 15 are named at your blog. The 16th track is "My Hawaiian Summer Rose".

Thanks for the catch, Mike. I will be posting another set probably tomorrow, so anyone who hasn't downloaded the first set is advised to do so today.
BTW, I have decided to do away with the proper naming convention and will name them according to the order I put them up. What was once "tape 14" is now just Tape 1, same as its mp3 tag.
