I posted a little blurb about Gary Carter as I did Thumbs Carlisle and Curly Chalker not one comment or I liked it.... Of course what I posted was about REAL Country Music. I think a lot of players have become allergic to it. They want to act like Country was the LAST thing on the minds of the guys who developed the instrument.
I just saw an ad for American idol and that Taylor Swift.... if that's Country music i would hang up my wanting to play,it isn't even good Rock Music I liked and still like some Rock/pop Music some of this #%#%@^ (being really nice)Makes me want to Throw up.
When I listen to Toms Waltz,Or Close up the honkytonk's I still get cold chills.. Brumley was brilliant!. Ralph Mooney another one... good thing Waylon didn't fire Moon when he got 30 back in the 60's we would never had Rainy Day,Or Merle Haggard greats,Buck Owens stuff... ...
I love the real stuff. in "CASE" you didn't know:).. I have done been told by a well known maker of goods ... that anyone over the age of 30 should not play as a Pro since no one wants to hear us feeble things.....This is only my OLD and FEEBLE opinion(there go those voices again), I guess ones like me who have met the likes of Speedy West,Julian Tharpe,Hal Rugg,Jeff Newman should just curl up and die like Floyd... on Hudson and Landry...lol These Boys........

I wouldn't say people are allergic to it, I believe it's access to it. Look at contemporary Country music radio, that wouldn't compel me to go out and buy a steel. Americana radio doesn't play any of those folks either. I got into buying my Carter Starter, then my Dekley from Jerry Garcia and Lloyd Maines! I loved Hee Haw when I was younger, no country music growing up in my house, but the sound of a Dobro/Steel touched the soul. Curiosity will sometimes make one do some research, and doing that I discovered alot of the PSG pioneers. Red Rhodes is my PSG mentor at this time.
IMHO, Townes Van Zandt is the best singer-songwriter ever, when I wear a t-shirt of his, maybe once a year, someone will know who he is, others usually ask if he's related to Ronnie Van Zandt! I believe that we are the ones who have to spread the word on these PSG pioneers.

Sorry for this, home with a cold......

Your reference to Townes brings back memories. I knew him in the early 80's and he was the reason I went to play in Austin for a year. His guitarist, Micky White, helped me get my first gigs and borrowed my guitar for awhile when his was in the pawn shop I think.

Townes was a great songwriter and one of the strangest and most troubled people that I've ever encountered. You'd be sitting talking to him at some bar and all of a sudden things just ...changed. And from then on for the rest of the night you never knew what he was going to say. I picked him up to drive him to gigs when he was on tour in Pennsylvania and he would start the day by drinking vodka straight from the bottle.

A brilliant, sad, and tortured soul.

As for the rest of the thread, in this day of Spotify and Pandora when you can listen to whatever you want, I don't know why people complain about the state of country music. If you don't like Taylor Swift or the current country scene, there is really not need to listen to it. you can listen to traditional country all day long and never hear a repeat.

That's why my little 9x10 bedroom, music room is so overcrowded with 78, 45, 33 1/3 rpm records, tape cassettes, CD's and MP-3's. I can listen to 'my kind of country music' anytime I so choose.

I gave up on country radio stations shortly after Elvis made his big splash. He put a lot of us olde timers out of business and it's been down hill every since.

I agree. There have been similar rants like this posted over the years.

I've been playing music since the 1960's, playing drums, percussion, guitar, and steel guitar. I've played in rock & roll bands, marching bands, orchestras, jazz bands, country bands, etc. I love all kinds of music. When I'm in the car, I turn on the radio, scan for something I like, and listen to it. If I don't like it, I don't listen to it. I can see that it would be frustrating if I only liked one particular genre of music.

"I invite anyone to tell me what FM radio station in the COUNTRY that plays country music"

Bill, FM Radio is almost a dinosaur these days, dying like the music you love. You can download spotify for free ( I pay them $10 a month for no commercials and better sound quality). You can then download songs you like to play when you are off line.

When I go on a trip I download the music I want to hear on spotify and then play it through my car stereo through the aux plug. It is a great solution for me. On a recent trip to PA, I had the top Billboard 100 playing for my girlfriend and Dr. John's compete works for me.

There are ways around the limitations of FM. In fact, my radio antenna broke off about a year ago and I've never felt the need to get it fixed.

I thought this problem had been fixed last year when I subscribed to Sirius Radio. Willies Place was a great place to listen to Western Swing, and Texas dancehall music. Almost all-day, non stop C6th.
Then the FCC decided Willie controlled the the airwaves with four stations, a monopoly. So, of course, they axed that station. And, I axed Sirius. It's back to my cd collection. And I have a good sized one of Western Swing and Classic Country. I regret having purchased the eqipment for the truck and house, only to be reduced down to the choice of yet another current country rundown. The only other stations I listened to were the jazz and bluegrass occasionally.
