Ravi Shankar passed away at 92 years old today.

He was an influence on me at an early age. When I was in highschool he and Maynard Ferguson did a concert as a fund raiser for our highschool band. It was one of those life changing concert events for me.

I was really into him when I was in college. My music theory teacher was an old studio musician (first violinist in one of the movie studio orchestras), so when I showed up with his collaboration with Yehudi Menuhin, she was intrigued enough to let the class listen to one song.
My favorite quote from the Concert for Bangladesh:
"If you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more."

RIP Pandit Ravi Shankar

I read in the NY times obit that he regretted later being part of the rock and roll concert scene as he objected to drug use in his audience. He found it disrespectful.

Iconic figure. Sorry to hear he's gone.

I had no idea he was that age. First I remember of him was in the '60's. Beatles et al. That exposure sort of spawned a mini sitar movement in the era.

He's also the father of Norah Jones, I believe.

Yes. Nora didn't know he was her father until she was an adult. I don't believe she wanted a relationship with him, if I remember right.

Shankar lived with Norah, and her mother Sue Jones, till Norah was about 5 years old. Then he left and married Sukanya Rajan, whom he also had a daughter with, Anoushka Shankar born just two years after Nora.
Norah always knew who her father was, she just didn't have a relationship with him growing up.

Here is Norah's sister, and Ravi Shankar's daughter, Anoushka, and if you ever get a chance to see her play GO, she is great.

I guess there is conflicting reports on that. In this article it says she didn't know who her father was until she was 10: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-180175/Me-Norah-Jones.html

who knows. sad though when a father is absent from his daughters life.

How can it be conflicting? I posted a link to an interview, with Norah on 60 minutes, where she says she lived with her dad when she was very young and knew who he was. She does say that when she was young that she didn't know he was famous, but she always knew who her dad was. This is Norah saying it herself, not some blog or tabloid newspaper.

Regardless of the relationship, the apple doesn't fall very far from the tree.

Both daughters of the great Ravi are brilliant musicians.

Norah's (with an "h") latest CD Little Broken Hearts is outstanding.

I agree, they are both incredible talents.
Here are both of them together on one of Anoushka recordings.

Sorry about the "h", I went back and edited my post for ya. I do know a Nora, with no "h", so I always get mixed up on what one does or doesn't have it.

And Norah is absolutely beautiful and cool. I'm sure Ravi was proud of her.

His "Raga Mala" is one of the autobiographies that I ordered before I'd even finished the library copy, and re-read periodically. He was a gifted and strong man who made certain decisions he came to regret - and was strong enough to admit it, and to change & repair what he could. He got swallowed up by the "Ambassador of Indian Music" role that was both available and very ego-rewarding to him (he liked girls) and he had to haul back and reset his goals. At the height of it he was intentionally playing happy simple dumb music, and he realized it would ruin him. When he re-emerged in the 1980's he was playing dangerous again.

sorry, alvin, I wasn't saying you were wrong. I was just pointing out that the reason I thought she didn't know her father was that was what I read at the time.

No big deal Bill.
The one thing I know is that Ravi, Anoushka, and Norah are all beautifully talented people. I'm so glad that I got to see, and hear, Ravi Shankar play.

I, too, am glad to have seen Shankar perform: a great musical experience.
