I sure did like the tone that Jim had last night on Tru-Country. I assume he was playing an Emmons PP. I got a glimpse of a Peavey amp. Does anybody know anything about Jim's rig? I am not about to go out and buy what he was playing, just curious. I would never sound like Jim even if I had his equipment.

PS: The whole show featured vocalists Jake Hooker and Tommy Hooker. Are they related? (father-son, possibly)

Thanks, George

Jim has played his push-pull through a Nashville 400 for several years. My guess would be that's what he was using.

Jake Hooker is Tommy Hooker's son. I've worked with both of them at different times and both are great singers and exceptional musicians.

When I've seen Jim in recent years with Ray Price and at the Phoenix show he's been playing his Wraparound. Sometimes through a Peavey, once through a Standel. Always incredible, classic P/P tone, and, yes, it's not all in the gear.

One thing I know for sure, is that Jim turns his "MIDS" totally off on his amp. I was with him a few months ago and asked him about his setup.

I too noticed Jims sound sounded a a bit more "hot" on the show last week. It jumped out at me right away!
Could be Jake request a more "twang" or "rip" in the tone. The steel was way out front and predoment in the mix. And how about that Jake Hooker? Wow. Talk about a vocalist singing from the gut. My favorite artist right now! Anywhere!
I am going to see Ray Price live at Oneida Casino in Green Bay Wisconsin tonight. If Jim is around and available I will ask. He's is very approachable and one of the nicest guys you will ever meat in Country Music!
Merry Christmas to all!

It seems to me that Jim's tone has changed at some point in the last year or so. It's different now. Still very good, but different.

Unless Jim has changed, he plays straight to the amp, no effects.

Last time I saw him play (a couple of months or so ago) that's the way it was. Emmons PP to goodrich volume pedal to Nashvville 400, but the sound was a little different to times a year or two ago when I heard him live. I used to have his settings and they was very different from what I was used to. I couldn't do much with them.
