Topic: Value of vintage twin vs deluxe reverb ?? |

I was considering trading my blackface Deluxe reverb for a blackface twin reverb.
Assuming both pieces are original and in similar condition, is one worth more than the other?
It was suggested by a forumite (Thank you Larry Cole!) that the deluxe is worth a lot more than the twin.
How could I confirm the value ? I think I had assumed the twin was worth more. I think I might just keep what I've got. The guy with the twin is way too anxious now that I've cooled on the idea a bit!

I wouldn't do that trade, myself. I like both amps, but I think an original BF DR is worth more, simply because there is a whole lot more guitar players that want them. Better yet, save up your dollars and buy a BF TR and keep the DR.

I would agree with Tom and Larry. The BFDR is generally in higher demand from the 6 stringer crowd. It's one heck of a guitar amp, and with the right speaker in there, it's pretty nice with PSG in a lower volume setting.

The BF Deluxe Reverb actually is worth a bit more. Per the 2012 Vintage Qutiar Price Guide the prices for excellent condition are:
Twin Reverb $2300.00
Deluxe Reverb $2650.00 |

IMO, the VG price guide differential is legit. A blackface Deluxe Reverb is more desirable to most guitar players, a blackface Twin Reverb is more desirable to most pedal steel players. Now consider the difference in the number of guitar players vs. pedal steel players. There are obviously a lot more guitar players than pedal steel players (and others who really want plenty of clean power like jazz guitar players), ergo significantly more demand for Deluxe Reverbs, which has driven up the price. On the supply side, there were probably more Deluxes made, but there have been so many guitar players out there beating them up for decades now that it's getting harder to find clean, original examples.
My take is that the demand for higher-power old Fender amps is generally lower than for the lower-power amps. Twins, Supers, and Pros relatively-speaking languish as compared to Vibroluxes, Deluxes, and Princetons. Go to any vintage guitar show and you'll see the difference - it's not just the price, but how quickly they move at the market price.
If this BF Twin is the one from this thread - http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=237095 - I would be very wary. If I decided I really wanted the Twin and the Deluxe was in real nice shape, I would demand significant cash along with the Twin to make that deal. |

Great points here by all, and the fact that this vintage trader is now pushing for a deal as I am backing off, reinforces the notion of great deal for him, for me, not so much.
Tim, your reasoning of twin for steel ,deluxe for guitar, was what caused me to consider the trade. I'm only interested in steel, but I have a lot of amps, no need to make a bad deal.
Dave,yes this is the same guy who thought his twin had three 6L6s and a tube rectifier.
I think I will keep what I've got. Thanks to all who responded. |

Whatever you do, keep the DR. With a JBL K or D series speaker it`s a wonderful low volume/recording amp.

the smaller amps are worth more because most of the guys who started buying them and therefore setting the prices wanted small amps they could play at home in lower vol settings and get some distortion out of them. you cant stay in a room with a twin when it starts to break up! lol
funny how the weight and vol of the cheaper amps has eclipsed the monumental twin! the little fenders are in much more demand than those old heavy weights. supply demand...... |
