Sacred Steel, and all that comes with it made a splash in this town last Friday. They had a work shop that was advertised to the public in the local paper as a singing work shop for folks to participate in this very unique Pentecostal tradition. To my suprize Chuck and his brothers discussed in detail the Steel Guitar aspect of their worship tradition and did so in a very clear and precise way. Chuck's telling of his first encounter with Jimmy Day in the early 70's nailed in a few sentences; via his demonstration of Day with a wine bottle in his left while playing "Just a Closer Walk" with his right hand on the strings and the pedals with the foot had many of the uninitiated suddenly making the connection to our instrument and the mechanical possibilities. I came prepared to meet Chuck and maybe get a taste of this unuque tuning and its Copedent, with picks and bar. Once he got the folks singing he invited any musician on stage to play. What the heck next thing I know I.m sitting behind the 12 string Excell with a very quizical look on my face. Chuck turn to me and grabs two adjacent rods and says " These are the A and B pedals and away I go while folks line up to take a stab at "When the Saints Go Marching In". It was a bit unnerving but in the spirit of "Call and Response" I and got with the feel of the music. I understand a little bit more about the unison E's and other aspects of Chucks invention. The Cambell's are fine people. Go see them when they visit your town.
