Those of us in the know (Ken Metcalf, stand up!) are hip to the guitar slinging of Unknown Hinson (he was named after his daddy). Unknown has been a long-time feature of Albemarle, NC cable-access as well as a multi-instrumental music teacher extraordinaire.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unknown_Hinson
I was able to catch Unknown at Reggie's Rock Place in Chicago this last weekend... fortunately he had brought a steel player from NC with him, known as Jimmy Church... this allowed Unk to do his more country numbers; the two times I'd seen him before he was doing the power trio thing and couldn't cover his more sensitive songs since the steel playing (his own, BTW) was so integral to them. He was able to play most of my favorites.
Jimmy is a member here although he's never made a post according to the member stats. He's got several YouTube videos giving away his lick secrets:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swsbbO_dMAA
and others, on his channel:

... nice of him to contribute in that way. Anyway, if any of you like to 'rawk' once in a while, or like humorous country ("I Ain't Afraid Of Your Husband" is a fave), or just to see some good picking, check out Unknown Hinson and his Country Western Troubadors when they make it through your area... chances are there'll be steel guitar going on!

Man, UKH will be in Cleveland this Friday. I was trying to talk myself out of going. Now that I know he'll have steel, I just gotta go. |

That show at reggies was amazing. It was great to see him with a steel player as well. He always puts on a great show, but the steel added that extra bit to make it magic. _________________ http://soundcloud.com/tower-4

Sadly, Unknown is quitting the road after almost 18 years of touring. I have decided to attend his last show, at the Madison Theater, Covington, KY this Saturday night 11/17/2012. I assume that the show and personnel will be the same I saw in July, meaning that Mr. Jimmy Church will once again be performing PSG duties.
I'll be wearing my customary UH shirt, a Harley blue-jean jacket, and a welder's cap, sporting my handlebar mustache (it's Movember, the month of mustaches, BTW). If any of you can attend and see me stop by and say hello. It should be one for the ages. _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |

Here's the text of the email Ken Metcalf forwarded to me:
"Well, it had to happen eventually. I, Stuart Baker, pka Unknown Hinson, have come to the end of my touring career. After nearly 18 years of hitting the highway, I'm taking a permanent break from the road. There are some real sharks out there in the music business, but we've been lucky enough to get out without any serious injuries, and with a lot of happy, cherished memories. I definitely have the coolest audiences in the universe. I've had club owners and managers say really nice things about you - your behavior, your manners, your friendly attitudes, your way of herding the over-served toward the door, and from the bar staff - your generous tips!
Thanks to all of the friendly, funny and talented people I've met along the way. I've always been humbled by the level of fan loyalty. So very many good folks I've met and conversed with have become my close friends. It's been a pleasure and an honor to play for you. Every bit of enthusiasm shown by the audiences who came to see me perform was appreciated. Your support at the shows made each night a better one, and my life a richer one.
I will continue to produce music and distribute it through the site, and we're working to finish the DVD (now that we definitely have the time).
You just don't know how much the handshakes, compliments on the music, positive comments and over-the-top loyalty has meant to me, and how they gave me the desire and ability to carry on. Don't be strangers - my email is unknown@unknownhinson.com. I'm proud to have met all of you and trust that you have a happy, healthy and wealthy future. (You'll still be hearing me as Early Cuyler on Adult Swim's Squidbillies program)
We'll still be doing giveaways and newsletters via our fan base list, so if you haven't signed up, the form is waiting at www.unknownhinson.com - fans.
Best Regards,
Unknown Hinson (Stuart Baker)" _________________ New FB Page: Lap Steel Licks And Stuff: https://www.facebook.com/groups/195394851800329 |
