Cool! Do you play regularly in Singapore? I will be visiting briefly the end of the month and would love an evening of some country music with steel!

I too enjoyed the video. Sure glad to see traditional country being played overseas. The steel player did a nice job too. Can you post his name?

Hi Douglas,

I play weekly.on bass, not on steel yet, long way to go.

They are playing every Saturday,in a private club for members only. Only members can sign guest in. I have not been able to find friends who are members to sign me in. Let me know the date/s you are in Singapore, we can perhaps arrange for a meeting together with him if timimg is suitable. send me a mail at adawang@singnet.com.sg for contact number.

Hi Paul,
Sure, his name is Michael Png, He is an amazing guy who learnt steel with just 1 book and figured everything himself. There wasn't anybody in Singapore who know how to play the pedal steel, for him to learn from.
The singer Matthew and Michael are the original members of the group & they have been to Nashville before. Michael bought the steel there. It was a long time back.

Rgds
Adrian

Keep up the good work fellows, maybe we'll get it back.

Hi Carl,

replied to your pm, thank you
I'm a country music fan trying to promote (revive /stir interest) in country music with pedal steel (a "must have" )

Scenario in Singapore, according to my estimates

non pedal lap 2 to 3 amateurs

pedal steel -
1 professional with Sho Bud D10 & Franklin S10 , converted from S12

and about 4 "L Plate" amateurs. 1 Fessy S10 and the 2 GFI S10 keyless, last one I forgot the brand he told me.
1 more point to add, I am the youngest of all the above.

I am 52. Should I be happy or sad.

Adrian, Your steel player should become a member here on the forum. It is the best bargain anyone will ever find. Being a member lets you ask questions and comment as you well know. I just admire his playing considering he did not have much to work with as far as learning material. When I started in 1979 yhere was not much either. Today the internet has a wealth of info from which a person can learn. Best wishes to you guys and I hope you get plenty of gigs to play.

I think there are more people in the US than Singapore
who love country, as we can see the appreciation this thread.

Here is another one,
Let us enjoy.

Nice to see they are still around a making a great sound. There are not too many steel guitar players and bands in Singapore, but they would hold their own anywhere.

I know Michael from the many years I spent in Singapore and I used to attend some of the Matthew and The Mandarin evenings on Orchard Road and the Shangri - La. A great guy and a great pedal steel and guitar player.

Please remember me to him, and to the band.

Kay

I enjoyed the second video as well. Once again Michael played straight country which I love to hear. He can play fills and not override the singer. Please post some more videos if you can.

Adrian, I thought that was in one word: great! It is so nice to hear country music out of Singapore.
Michael is a good steel player with a good sound on the Franklin, plus he doubles on lead. Quite a talent!
I believe that Singapore, China and other Asian countries are the great untapped market for Country and pedal steel. This band tends to prove it to me.
Yes, post more!

That is some fantastic sound and style right there! The intros, fills, leads, everything is pure country and just right, at least for me. Lots of good closeups of Michael's playing, I'm going to study these two vids closely, as I'm working on backup and fills and this is really nailing the style I'd ultimately like to develop.

Hey Adrian....so glad you posted that, Singapore is my place of birth. I lived off Bukit Timah rd. Check my website.
It's been years since I returned there to see my relations 1987 to be precise. I know that band has been going for years. Congrats to Michael on steel. Glad the older Country is played there. The newer stuff out of Nashville these days don't seem to know the existance of a pedal steel. Good on you guys, say a big hi to the band from a former Singaporian Very Happy
