Listening to "I Sang Dixie" by Dwight Yoakam on Pandora. I think I can tell who the steel player is, but not sure.

Who is it?

There are two versions. The one with a real steel solo is Tom Brumley. The other one with steel & guitar doubling...I once asked and I think the answer was 'maybe Jay Dee.'

Here's just the solo. This is special to me too. A benchmark of touch & tone & smoothness.

In order to play this ride correctly, you must lower
your 6th string 1/2 a tone, Tom explained it to me
in Branson shortly after he recorded it.

I just heard this on the radio a couple minutes ago. It's one of my favorite all time examples of great pedal steel fills and breaks ever. Such sweet tone and playing. Always loved Tom's work.

I got to meet Tom out in Las Vegas when they did the Buck Owens tribute on the awards show and we talked about I Sang Dixie. I told him what great tone I thought it was. He said he played through a Lab Series L5 (or L9 I can't remember) and that he didn't really care much for the tone, even though he had gotten a lot of compliments on it. I've never tried steel through a Lab Series. Anybody out there ever tried one?

Wow. Makes one wonder what sound he had in his head that he considered good tone...

Hey Tim...
A Lab? Wow... I always thought it was a Deluxe. I remember that we had a bunch of amps in the studio for Tom to choose from, including my Session 400.
I'll have to ask Pete if he remembers what Tom used.
Whatever it was, the sound he got on that solo was over the top awesome.

I agree, Skip. I remember telling him that the only time I'd ever seen or heard a Lab Series amp was Ricky Skaggs'. I would've bet a lot of money that it was a tube amp. Aren't all of those Lab's solid state? Anyway, I always kinda kept a lookout for a Lab Series for sale after I found that out. They're not easy to find. Let me know what Pete remembers about the session.

If I remember right, Tom told me he also took along one of his JBL D-130's to use in that amp. I am thinking it was the Lab Series too but I sure could be wrong on that one. Tom could get good tone through a feedsack!!!!! Dixie was such a good solo and tone!!!

So... I spoke with Pete, and he says that Tom used a blackface Twin, thru an extension cabinet with a 15". He added that Tom might have just used the amp without the extension, just using the two 12's.
He was positive that it wasn't a Lab, though.
He also remembered that Tom got to the studio way early...around 9am...and tried a bunch of different amp and speaker combinations before the session started.
I remember it as being a Fender, and yeah, it sure sounds like tubes to me, too.

Maybe this will be one of those enduring mysteries.

Oh yeah! And I was terminally bummed out when I got the Vegas! The Lab with the EV 15 is a fantastic steel amp. Not to be confused with later ss amps. They sound like a tube amp. And for guys doing double-duty, they also sound wonderful with a Tele.
A friend was an engineer at TNN, from before they even went on the air. He called and said that they were ordering their backlines, and he could get me a Peavey steel amp at below cost. So I jumped. The Lab, with a 15, blows any Peavey away! I was so bummed when I had to sell it to pay for the Peavey. I truly hated that Vegas! But I sold it for more than I payed for it,,,,,, and couldn't find a Lab, so I got a Twin.

AL you would actually lower the 6th a whole tone, but pedal in the B pedal with a tuneable split, to give you that 7th note !!
Wonderful solo for sure Very Happy

Well it seems like I've started a bit of confusion or discrepancy or something...

First and foremost..whatever amp it was, I think it was a really good solo with really good tone. That's my opinion.

Second, I wasn't at the studio so I don't know what time he got there or how many amps he tried out.

But I do know for sure that the day that I talked to Tom Brumley face to face about the song "I Sang Dixie" he told me that he played through a Lab Series amp...and that he "didn't care much for the tone".
