This is a Fender “Artist” Single 10 E9 3 pedals, 4 knee levers (not to be confused with the similar looking 3+1 student model). All-pull, double raise/double lower changer. The Artist line was built by Sho-Bud for Fender in the mid 1970s, it has the Superpro linkage on the underside, while maintaining the fender “ashtray” key head and “knife-edge” (i.e., no axle) changer design. This is a professional axe in tone and playability, with a fully adjustable changer for changing the copedant. It has been recently taken apart and cleaned, lubed, and fine tuned. It would make a great step up from a student steel for a beginning or intermediate player, or an excellent second, grab-and-go guitar for a gigging player. Current copedant is:

Pedal 1 raises strings 5 and 10 from B to C#
Pedal 2 raises strings 6 and 3 from G# to A
Pedal 3 raises string 5 from B to C# and string 4 from E to F#
LKL raises strings 4 and 8 from E to F
LKR raises string 1 from F# to G#, lowers string six from G# to F#
RKL lowers strings 4 and 8 from E to D#
RKR lowers string 2 from D# to C# with a half stop at D-natural, lowers string 9 from D to C#

It is a relatively small-profile steel with virtually no back shelf. This makes it a good candidate for small gigs where stage space is at a premium. That said, it is not especially light, nor particularly heavy: about the same as my S-10 Fessenden, @30lbs outside the case; @45lbs in the case.

Cosmetically, it shows many battle scars and won’t win a beauty contest, but it looks quite decent from a few feet away. It is a black lacquer guitar (not mica), with many weather cracks in the finish. There are also numerous dings and a couple of small screw holes on the back apron (see below). The metal has its share of scratches and dings, like most Sho Bud guitars from this era, can only be buffed out so far before showing signs of pitting.

The single-coil pick up is a custom-made replacement for the original . It has great tone, but is more “generic” sounding than the original which fell somewhere between the sound of a Fender cable guitar and a Sho Bud. I will include the original pick up with the steel.

For a relatively exhaustive description of the guitar and what I have done to it please see this pdf file .

I have highlighted some of the worst blemishes in the pics below. The dripping substance in one of the undercarriage pics is the newly applied triflow lube; I have since wiped it off with no residue.

Case is a bit dirty and one of the hinges is a little askew, but it closes up and functions well. I removed the blocks to hold the guitar up and inserted foam on the bottom instead.

$1000 plus shipping from 03824
