S10 Franklin Pull

I have just got a Franklin S10 E9 PSG
On the 5th, there are 4 nylon tuners.
One of these is Black, and is connected by various rods to a common crank. This has no pull/bellcrank.
Is this because there used to be another pedal, or could there be another reason.

All the black colored tuners on my Franklin are for the drop return compensators. These are on strings that are both raised and lowered and allow tuning out the hysteresis (tendancy for the lower to come back sharp).

On my Franklin D-10 the black tuners are for the split tunings

My D-10 Franklin is an 81 model and has the original nylon tuners on it.

He may have changed in later production models.

Yea that sounds right Jack, Paul used the shorter ones on the compensators on mine and the black on the splits.

The giveaway clue here is that the rods are not connected to bell cranks, so it would be a return compensator as Jack points out !

John , you can see in this pic the same type of set up as is on your steel. the off color fingers are on a stationary cross rod ...I think Jack is correct, but they can also be used to pull an adjacent sting back to pitch . for example I have one that pulls my 6 string up a couple cents when I raise my 7 string a full step.

if i remember correctly, there are a few more on your Franklin.. maybe 4 or 5 on that rod.

I have a full tone lower on the 6 string to F# and when I raise the string with the B pedal and lower it the full tone the black tuner tunes the G back to pitch.
My compensators are the short ones and as you say fixed,

Looks like Paul done mine a little different maybe cause of the split on the 6 six string. My compensators are the same as yours but he left them white and cut them shorter

Keith, my 5th and 6th string full lowers are tuned with the allen screws on the top (in my "face").

The splits are tuned with the regular lower tuners.

As I noted, yours is probably a later model than mine. I have a "split tail" neck. Later model necks have a pseudo wraparound at the back of the changer.

I think John's steel has the smaller metal tuners like jack's ... I didn't even try to turn any of them when i tried it.. the pedals and changer were so gummy and thick , like heavy grease lube .
Looking at the pics of the other S10 for sale i was surprised to see No compensators or a fixed cross rod.

I have a question for you Franklin owners. I picked up a used Franklin recently that has the short compensators installed. The guitar is not
setup how I'd like so I am going to rerod it to my liking. This guitar has a vertical lever (E9th) that lowers B's to A's. There is also a compensator on 5. Because of that, I have no more holes
to set up the Franklin pedal. I just use the standard B to Bb on the vertical. I'm assuming that I need to remove the compensator to setup the Pedal 4 so that it lowers both 5 and 6 a whole tone. Does that sound right?

If you "know what your doing" then go ahead and redo it the way you want, otherwise it would be best to let Mr Franklin do it if you want it to still feel and play like a Franklin. (Assuming you are going to be making major changes in the setup).

Steve,

To keep the return compensator (do keep it), you have to sacrifice one of the lowers. I like the Bb on LKV also, so my Franklin pedal only moves the 6th string G# to F#, and the low B to A.

Yes I am putting the 705 back on
After playing my Rains PSG, I saw just
how the 710 lacked the punch and sustain that
the 705 has,
The 710 resistance is 18k, the 705 is 19k
I will the push the Franklin through a blackbox before any pre-amp
Plus a new set of SIT HG strings

Thank you Dean for the response. I've not had a guitar with return compensators before so I was questioning just how necessary they are. I'll go with your recommendation of keeping them and live with the G# to F# lower by itself. I am going to rerod the guitar on the weekend but I'll keep the return compensators. Thanks again for your advice
