I have a Rick frypan that's got about 1/2 of the old gold/yellow paint still on it and I like the old vintage look so would rather keep the old paint on, but it needs to be cleaned and I'm afraid to touch it until I know what to use. Could someone please suggest what I might use? And any opinion as to whether most folks prefer to just strip the old paint off? Thanks for any advice, I appreciate it!

If you clean it you may reduce it's value by 50% according to experts like George Gruhn. Exclamation

Thank you Gary for replying. Do you think plain old soap and water would be the best thing? I don't want to do any harm to the existing paint, which I love, or the guitar as a whole, so am perhaps just being overly cautious? I just want to clean off the dust, grime, dirt that's accumulated over the years. I recently acquired it and don't know where it's been but it looks like just a lot of surface dirt.

I think a damp cloth with a little bit of soap on it would be safe. Just don't scrub too hard! No metal polish... polishing will remove the patina. Cool

Thank you Doug. The damp rag worked, dirt and grime safely removed, aged patina is intact (on both the axe and myself, lol). Strung it up and wow, I'm in love! There's a bit of pitting on the chrome pickup cover, can you suggest a product I might use to stop the rust from spreading?

I just sold a Deluxe 8 that had a tiny bit of pitting on the control plate. I used my favorite, California Custom's Purple Polish. When I was done, I couldn't even find the pits. But the control plate then looked brand new, high shine. If that's not what you wanna do, maybe rubbing some wax, like candle wax, into the pitted areas? Regular car and instrument waxes usually have cleaners in them, so they'd probably clean and shine the chrome.
