Hey Everyone , I've got an old sho-bud Maverick that I love ,it's nice and light and awesome for gigging. The old pickup in there sounds good but is a single coil and pretty noisy with lots of humming and background noise.
I've been thinking about putting in a different pickup , does anyone have advice on what a good Pedal Steel pickup is or have any for sale ?
here's my youtube channel you can listen to my current tone which I love , but there's just so much background noise and humming ( which you can't hear now , but in a quiet song it's very obvious )

I'd keep the original and have it rewound by Jerry Wallace at Truetone if it's really noisy. |

When looking into trying out pickups make sure you get a "long mount" sho bud style one. Also make sure you measure everything carefully. Some current pickups might be too tall to be mounted without routing. _________________ Bob |

I'd send it to Jerry Wallace. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

If you want to go humbucking I find the Bill Lawrence 710 sounds quite similar to the Sho-Bud pickup tone. Lloyd Green has used a 710 in his iconic LDG, maybe still does. |

Hi Jordan,
I had a Maverick, I'm not shure that other pickups wil fit. Sending you're pickup to Jerry Wallace may be a good advice.
Hope you don't mind another advice, but I think you should practice on your volume pedal technique. In my humble opinion you're pumping it too much. I think that if you focus on that, your overall sound will improve a lot in a short time. _________________ ----------------------------------

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll contact Jerry for sure ! The only issue is I don't know what the turnaround time is and I can't go too long with my pedal-steel as I need it for recording and shows. So i'll find a break in my schedule to send it to him.
Marco...As for your advice I will definitely watch out for that... I guess I'm too used to using the volume pedal with my electric guitar. So you're suggesting less drastic volume swells? i'm going from too quiet to too loud too harshly ? Could it also be my pedal that does harsher swells ( not to find excuses haha) ? _________________ Thomas D10 | Linkon S10 | Modified ShoBud Maverick | YouTube --> Click Here! |

Jordan,
I sent mine to Jerry Wallace. He let me know when to ship it. I had it back in 7 days. The cost was much lower than I expected. |

Jordan,
That is right. When you pick the strings, leave the volume a little open, not completely silent. Than increase the volume more slowly. _________________ ----------------------------------

One way to practice vol pedal technique is to plug straight into the amp bypassing the ped. But leave the pedal under your foot. That way you will break the habit of moving your foot when you move your fingers.
That pumping thing is a sound that most steel players struggle with at first. It is a sound mostly used by guitar players when they try to play fake steel licks. For some reason guitar players think that mmweep mmweep sound has something to do with a pedal steel.
I would check around for a cheap used maverick pickup or look into one of these:

On thinking about it more I don't think a rewind or another Maverick pickup will help much at all if your concern is noise and hum. Jon's device might be the way to go. On the other hand $250 is at least 10 percent of a full on pro level used steel. _________________ Bob |

Hey Bob that's too funny lol because I've always noticed that even when I play pedal steel with my amp turned off I still always do volume swells out of habit even though it's completely pointless haha. I guess as a guitarist you always think that big swells are the key to a pedal-steel sound. I will definitely try that idea of forcing myself to not always do the swells because right now it's almost like a reflex that every-time I pick a note my foot moves the pedal too _________________ Thomas D10 | Linkon S10 | Modified ShoBud Maverick | YouTube --> Click Here! |

We put a 710 in our LDG and never looked back, brought the old girl to life for sure.

Hey Jordan, what's up? I had a similar problem with my LDG, lots of noise and all, it was unbearable. Then I moved to a new place and it was dead quiet. No hum whatsoever. I bought a humbucker from Al Brisco which I still haven't installed because I have no reason to change pickups now.
Short of moving into a house where the current is clean, you could look for one of those power bars that regulates the current or something. My friend uses those in his studio and it's pretty effective. All this to say, make sure you identify the cause of the problem before choosing a strategy. It quite possible that there is nothing wrong with your pickup. |

Hey Bob--thanks for the mention. Let me add to the discussion. I totally agree that throwing large money at a Maverick is a questionable way to go (although my rig would be carried over to a new steel so it's not money lost). But you can easily buy a used pickup for the Mav for reasonable $$.
A Wallace pup or rewind is not the answer if you are needing a humbucker.
Do serious due diligence before buying anything. I wanted to replace the original Sho-Bud pup in my 12 string Pro 1 and was fortunately cautioned that even though a 710 (712) narrow mount might fit an S-10, it might not fit a 12. And sure enough it did not--the guitar's milling was too narrow. I hacked the guitar to make it fit. I've got a 912 in there that I like but I'm always open to trying something new.
FWIW, I have an Alumitone in my Fessenden and I totally love it. I put one in the Bud and I hated it. Pairing of guitar and pickup is an interesting trial & error thing.

so i've taken all of your advice and sent it off to Jerry Wallace. I should get my pickup back in about a week cant wait! I took that time to facelift my Maverick too, removed the old vinyl fake wood , varnished it and I'll be adding a second knee lever. I'll post up pics of the steel soon and a video eventually with the new rewound pickup _________________ Thomas D10 | Linkon S10 | Modified ShoBud Maverick | YouTube --> Click Here! |

Can't wait to see the result. Those Mavericks had nice wood underneath the vinyl. _________________ ----------------------------------

hey guys , so here's a final update. I ended up installing a L-710 pickup in my shobud and it sounds awesome and is dead quiet , I also added an extra knee lever and removed that fake ugly looking vinyl. Thanks for all the help and advice!
Here's a post I just put with pictures of the process and a youtube vid of the new sound
