Finally found a nickel string that I really like on dobro. I started using Emmons SIT for steel guitar a few years ago, after using Jagwire for several years. (Nothing against Jagwire cept their price) Decided to try them on dobro, and really like their clean, clear loud tone. Their the only Nickel string that I've tried and liked. If you hadn't tried em, give em a try.

I just bought a couple sets along with some SIT sets for my PSG. Looking forward to trying them. Seems the gauging is a little heavier than what I'm used to.
The local store only carries phosphor bronze for Dobro witch I've determined sound OK for about 1 set then decay quickly from bar wear. |

I've been using Martin M980 bluegrass nickel strings on my tricone with a Lace Ultraslim pickup. Phosphor bronze strings don't work well with this pickup. I like the Martin strings (plus they're the cheapest strings around), but I'll have to get a set of the SIT strings to do a comparison.

Terry, thanks for the heads-up on the SIT's. I just might give those a try. We nickel users are a definite minority in dobro-land. I've used nickel in some form for 30+ years, occasionally trying something else, but always coming back. I use the Martins Brad mentioned, but my current favorites are the GHS 1600 Pure Nickels, augmented with matching singles for my 8 string. Being semi-flat they seem a bit less noisy and they're Michigan made.

I might give a set of SIT nickel strings a shot "just for the halibut," but every nickel set I've tried in the past I thought was pretty horrible.

| A lot of my customer specify SIT semi-flat nickel strings for their custom lap steels. I prefer round wound nickel on my lap steels and EJ-42 Ph/Brz D'Addario on my Dobro, although I've used the GHS 1600 for recording sessions. My guitar gets Cleartone (Martin lifespan). I used the EJ42 Bronze on my dobro for years. They sound ok-ish, but have been hunting a nickel set that I might like, and finally found the SIT. I may try the Martin strings, never tried Martin for dobro.

| I think it depends on the application. If you're at a jam with 10 guitar players all banging away, the EJ42 or other phosphor bronze cuts through the noise and gives the volume that you can't get from a nickel string, but if you're on stage or in a studio playing through a mic, the nickel has an excellent sound. I haven't found that one brand is better than another. Just about all the strings sold under the popular brand names are piano wire made by Mapes Piano Wire Company in Elizabethton, TN. Go to www.mapeswire.com and click on Specialty Wire. I'm not knocking SIT, it's one of my best sellers here in the store, but there's nothing magic about SIT, D'Addario or any other brand. It is human nature to be influenced by packaging and marketing so that must be considered although some will disagree. Mapes Wire is good regardless of the brand. Just stay away from those $1.00 a set imports. |
