The 705 is a twin rail pickup and the 710 has two rows of pole pieces. |

To my ears, the double-polepiece 710 was a bit more focused and perhaps cut with a bit more treble than the twin-blade 705, which had a slightly stronger midrange. I base that on trying pairs consecutively on the same exact guitar through the same amp a few years ago. Actually, I tried pairs of 710's, 705's, and 910's this way, and at least in my test setup, the treble response went down slightly and the midrange response went up in that order - 710 more trebly and least midrangey, and 910 least trebly and most midrangey.
John, I still have your 12-string Zum - you were right, I've had a hard time playing any other universal since I got it. Right now there's a Lawrence 912 in there. The Truetone you had in it sounded great, and I still have it, but I needed a humbucker for certain things (mostly recording). I tried a 712, and it was a bit more edgy than I wanted. I would like to try a 12-string version of the 705, but I've never seen one, not even sure they made one. The 912 does sound very good, though. Overall, smooth but not muddy at all. |

Hi Dave, glad you still have the ZUM & like it, but then I knew you would.. Had I been younger I never would have sold it, but age & weakness set in so I opted for an S10 GFI Keyless, because of weight... Glad the Zum got a good home..
I also am thinking of a 705 or an Alumitone mostly because of recording, though hum should be my least of concerns, I make enough noise otherwise..lol.. If I see a 705 I will try it, don't like a muddy sound so I replaced the E66 with a Trutone... |

Dave, I also have the Bill Lawrence 912 humbucker in my E9 neck, sounds great, and now that I'm playing through a Gerry Walker Stereo Steel combo amp/preamp, the low end of my Mullen is really coming through much better.
Next experiment will be an Alumitone, played one on a friend's universal, sounded single-coily without the hum, quite nice. _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

My Franklin came with 705's. I changed them to the 710's. It didn't change the tone of the guitar but I had more string definition. |

I just received a new Fessenden from Jerry last week with a 710. Very clean, clear definition and lots of sustain, I mean lots! I'm very pleased with choosing a 710. I don't like muddy pu's.MD |
