Just got a rebuilt Altec 417 from dustysamps on eBay. MY OH MY what a fine sounding speaker! I've never owned a JBL, I'm sure they are just as good. Anybody know the history of Altec Lansing and JBL, is there a "Lansing" connection?

Yeah, you might say there was a "connection". It's a sad story, but J.B. Lansing was one of the founders of Altec-Lansing back in the '40s. He left to form his own company, JBL (for James B. Lansing) in the late '40s, but failed to make any money. He committed suicide a few years later because his business was failing. It's ironic how successful both companies would become just a decade later, with the advent of Hi-Fi, and the popularity of electric guitars. Both companies made quality speakers. |

I guess engineers don't always make good business men, kind of like musicians. But somebody sure had the engineering right on this speaker. Just finished trying it with my Fender Blues Jr., improved the sound 100%. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of amp I drive it with, it sounds so sweet for pedal steel I just want to keep practicing.
It makes me wonder where can you find a speaker this good that's being made today? |

I think this thread is about Altec 417's, so I'd like to to say Tommy that they are great. I'm a big JBL guy but I think 417's are every bit as good as D or K 120's, maybe even better. I've had them in the past and I seem to remember them having a bit "meatier" mids than the JBL's. |

I have a pair of Altec 417-8Hs and an Altec 418-8H. They are my favorite speakers, by far. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

I have an Altec 10" that I found on trash day over 15 years ago along with a 15" JBL, both in working condition (my guess was an angry landlord on a tenant, or just dumb luck). The Altec is in my BF Princeton Reverb, which now seems to weigh as much as my Vibrosonic. Definitely an improvement over the Oxford, which will go back in it, should I ever sell the amp. The JBL is waiting for a cabinet from Rick Johnson

Looks like the outer wall of an aerospace acoustic test chamber. Probably simulating lift off. Typically 140dB OSPL. LOUD! _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |
