I'm still curious to know what is meant by "original" National picks. There have been many models of National picks produced over the years.

The earliest Nationals were PAT. PEND., as shown above. I think those were late 1930s. I've seen those sell for over $300 a pair on eBay.
All National finger picks after the PAT. PEND. ones had "PAT. NO. 1787136" stamped on them. That patent number appears on all of the picks through the rest of the company's run... until the 1980s. Some sellers think the Pat. number on the pick means it's very early, but not so. They all had the patent number.
At some point in the middle of the company's history they added the USA stamp: "MADE IN U.S.A." and later just "U.S.A.". The patent number was still there too.
So the PAT. PEND. ones are the rarest and the most valuable. The ones WITHOUT the USA stamp are the next most valuable. (Those have the patent number, but no USA stamp). And the third in line are the USA stamped ones (also with patent number).
Not to be confused with the current National reproductions. Those have NP2 stamped on them.

There's a website somewhere devoted to National fingerpicks. It has a series of photos showing the picks from oldest to newest. Many of the differences are in the lettering on them. However, I have a bunch of them and, besides lettering, there are definite differences in shape and plating. The older nickel-plated one are, in my opinion, the best. I gotta say that you put on a pair of those and you become a convert. The newer ones are just not the same.
Finding the old ones is hard. But here's a hint. When you can, look in the neck pockets of old lap steel cases. I've found several sets that way. |

Hello everyone,
I would like to get past this selection process...
For a Double-Neck Steel E9 & C6 (I have an Infinity),
which has a sweeter sound:
Nickel plated National OR Silver-Nickel plated Hoffmeyer ??
(assuming the National's are still just nickel plated)
I'm pretty new at playing this thing.

Have you had any experience with any of the pick manufacturer's? I have tried nearly everything out there and the Hoffemeyer pick is the best I've ever used. Pricey yes, worth it to me. The new Nationals "NP2" are not in the same league as these, my opinion of course.
