Have an old Silvertone 150 SS dual channel head. When powered up, I can hear the speakers are getting a signal, but no sound output with an instrument plugged in any of the jacks for either channel.
I would surmise that the power amp is working OK and that the problem lies somewhere in the pre section?
Anyone I know that's willing to work on it wants a fortune and an eternity to look at it.
Long shot, I know, but does anyone have any suggestions for things I can look for myself? Thanks for any help. JO. |

Here is the drive section and the power amp. Could be anything in the drive section, bad transistor, open diode, open choke and even a bad coupling transformer. Looks like a tech would be needed.

Thanks for the info Ken. I shoulda figured as much. Unless you might be willing to give it a look over, I'll probably just let it go for a while.
At least I can still use the old 6-10 cab.
Thanks JO. |

I no longer work on transistor amps, just vintage tube amps. |

This was my first big amp... ended up being used for bass, it was that much louder than any other amp we had.
That's the best part of those old SS150's... the nice ceramic Jensens in there. At 5.33ohms you could connect to most any 4 or 8ohm amp. It's a different topology than the new SS amps we know... if run with no speakers connected it would blow. When the outputs go it's junk, the reverb was not good (piezo?), best to donate it to a boneyard and use the cabinet for something else. _________________ Too much junk to list... always getting more. |

Yeah, I know Ken. Too bad for me. I may have contacted you about this amp before. Appreciate the input anyway.
I'll hang onto it for a while still.
Stephen, I've been using the 6-10 cab off and on for a couple years or so with my other Silvertone 1482 6V6 amp on guitar and slide. The vintage Jensens are in fine shape and sound really good. I particularly like the big sound with the Metal patches from my SE-70. Sounds nice with clean guitar too, of course. |
