Wally this is great stuff. Zane's projects are great and this 'layering' as it is now sort of called is very challenging - his virtuoso playing is amazing. Instrumentals like this would get played on "alternate" radio here in OZ. Most radio won't play instrumental material here.
Years ago I think it might have been George Barnes that put a number of guitars together as a orchestra with all playing parts and this is just a (very good) modern day effort at the same concept.
To me this just blows Frank Zappa's stuff/sound into the weeds but then he's a 'legend' - but that's MHO. More of this and Pedal Steel WILL have a future. If we keep droning out the same country licks we will just keep the same faithful audiences and I'm afraid they won't get larger. _________________ Priebs GFI ('09)Short-Uni10. I like it. Jim Priebe you hit the nail on the head, that's why I don't care much to go to conventions anymore, same old songs and the same old players I've heard for the last 30 years, there's almost never anything new. _________________ Darvin Willhoite
MSA Millennium, Legend, and Studio Pro, Reese's restored Universal Direction guitar, a restored MSA Classic SS, several amps, new and old, and a Kemper Powerhead that I am really liking. Also a Zum D10, a Mullen RP, and a restored Rose S10, named the "Blue Bird". Also, I have acquired and restored the plexiglass D10 MSA Classic that was built as a demo in the early '70s. I also have a '74 lacquer P/P, with wood necks, and a showroom condition Sho-Bud Super Pro. |

I'm baffled. Apples and oranges, to put it mildly! The two seem as far from familial similarity in their musical endeavors as any pairing I could think of. Out of all the musicians in the world, why pick out Zappa to compare this to?
Spoken as one who finds this excellent indeed, and also thinks very highly of Zappa. |

Zane,
I loved the video you had up of this song "under construction". Nice to hear the finished product! Great piece. Rather than Zappa, I hear heavy influences from 70's "acid jazz" and jazz/rock fusion: Weather Report, Chick Corea/Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock, etc. You seem to capture the best of that era, IMO, with this song. A great example of steel "outside the box".

Sorry, I obviously did not explain myself very well. My point was that Zappa is a legend (I love his stuff) but Zane is really well known on the Forum - bit of a difference. Blind Freddy can see there is little similarity in their music (correct me if I'm wrong Zane). While, to my way of thinking (and listening) Zane is an even larger legend for his efforts. He also battles in a field where conservatism is rife whereas in the "standard' guitar world new sounds and styles are forever sort after (I've spent 55 years on guitar too as well as steel) and quickly snapped up, accepted and copied.
I am not implying that the conservatives should change but just want to commend a guy for his great work. _________________ Priebs GFI ('09)Short-Uni10. GFI ('96)Short-Uni SD11. ('86)JEM U12

Thanks for all the comments! I regret not taking the last 60 seconds of this recording to a different level. I may go back and do that and see what y'all think.
Stay tuned,

Who said I was a country boy? HAHA! Born and raised in the hills of Arkansas on a farm. I lived a mile from the graveled road. I owe my musical roots to the great Zane Beck who introduced me to Pat Martino and Oscar Peterson! Of course, Merle Haggard, George Jones along with Gospel greats like Hinsons and Rambos made their way into my list of influences as well. ) _________________ Zane King

Someday, I am going to get up the nerve to ask Zane how many steels he has. Seems like every other video shows several steels standing around. Heck, his Dad even made him one! Everyone needs a Dad like that! |
