It is great to hear someone that plays a diferent instrument compliment Buddy Emmons. What a great story Leon told. Of course we steel players are not surprised.

I related once years ago to a real old timer about what it was like to be around in that era, the mid '60s to mid '70s, when Emmons and Chalker were in their prime. What those guys were doing was unbelieveable, especially in light of the big-name "famous players" who had come only a decade or so before, like Alvino and Speedy. The old timer (a lifelong baseball fan) then related to me his memories of Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio, and said "I know exactly how these guys made you feel. They were the superstars of their day, and seeing them in person was unforgettable. You can't explain that feeling to someone who hasn't experienced it."

I never forgot that conversation.

What strikes me about the interview with Leon is the enthusiasm he still shows when describing his first gig with Buddy. The respect is amazing! I also love the way he tested the waters by counting Lady Be Good at a fast tempo. He wanted to see what Buddy could do. He was not dissapointed!
