Try A&B pedals 5th fret, no pedals 10th fret, A&F pedals 13th fret, A&B pedals 17th fret. All on strings 4,5,&6.

The lick that starts at 1:27 is a descending lick that sounds more like strings 3,4,5 and maybe 2 at times.

i think your right. i'd have to listen to it over a million times while sitting at the steel. i love that stuff..and the kinda muffled tone he gets sometimes. he and jaydee do this stuff really neato. i think it's off the cuff and 'of the moment', as to the phrasing.

wheweee, there are some things going on there. I like that tele sound, too. I think Bob Knight is referring to the front end of the passage in question, which is reprised a couple times later on. I agree Chris, that sound JH is getting is pretty sharp.

I'm gonna make a wild guess cuz I'm not at the steel right now...
I hear a chromatic descending lick at 1:27 with BC pedals down,strings 3,4&5 and possibly 4,5&6 alternating picking pattern(kinda like a walk down from a 3m,2m to 1M key of D? 17th fret starting point? I can't see because of the camera angle. Try reversing the sequence to strings 4,5,6 and then 3,4,5. It's hard to tell he's movin' so fast.

First off Barry, you need to be sitting in front of your steel. You are too good to let it just sit in storage.

I just love the green duds. Most would be too afraid to wear something so bold. Gotta hand it to the "old guard" in country music. They sure could dress.

John probably wouldn't have remembered specifically what he did on that clip. Being mechanically prepared to play, he would have trusted his momentary feelings of what to play on that or any other song, and unless in a studio environment, he would probably not have played the same ride exactly the same way more than once.

This overall arrangement of it sure is. (Just my opinion, of course.) John's nice picking and the bass player's unorthodox approach do their best to try to save it, but it's too plodding to be saved. Maybe it's just me, but I think it looks like Conway knows it isn't making it. (And check out the bass player's body language.)

Dangit, Richard! Now I'm hooked on this tune, specifically this performance. That bass player is what's got me hooked in, I think. The band is mixed really well. Hee Haw producers liked a good hot line feed, thankfully, and stage volume seems healthy. Looking at my records, country stars just dressed the best. At least for what I like. If I ever get good enough on steel to warrant it, I will have to get a suit of lights. No way around it.

I believe the bass player is Joe Lewis. He always did the high harmonies behind Conway, sort of like Conway's version of Don Rich with Buck.

There are a lot of great YouTube videos of Conway that have really good shots of John in action.
