Sorry for duplicating the question from my other post - I thought it might reach a broader audience as a separate post.

The Truetone PU in my new steel is too hot for my taste...distorts too easily and very dark sounding. I spoke with Jerry, and he offered to rewind it. Right now it reads at just under 16k. Any suggestions what to knock that down to to add more "sweetness", without making it too bright/thin? (I realize sweetness is a subjective term, but y'all know what I mean) The body is sycamore, which is similar to mahogany, so I'm told.

BTW, I want to make it clear that I'm not knocking Truetone PUs in the least...Jerry makes his pickups primarily for pedal-steel players, which they sound fabulous in. I know his will sound great in my steel as well.

Steve, I like that pickup around 8 or 9k. I had one quite a few years ago and it was real nice--somewhere around the hotness of a real PAF.

Do you have any pickup height adjustment? What I've found with Jerry's True Tones, and most any hot pickup for that matter, is that I like them set a little lower. That said 16k does sound a bit hot and while I can't offhand remember what value they were, I never considered TT's dark.

By all means try adjusting your string height. Otherwise let Jerry rewind it for you. He has special wound several lap steel PU's for me. Unless you're into electronics just follow his advice. You do need a different impedance for the lap steel. Also check your string spacing. You need at least 3/8 spacing.

You can also try a smaller volume pot... 100K will tone down some of the bright. Easier to change pots than to take windings off.
