I was going through some reading and refreshing my knowledge on modes. While I realize it's doubtful I'll ever use them on steel guitar, I play other instruments too.
My questions boils down to this: You create modes by simply starting a different place in the major scale. For instance if you're in C Major, playing from the 2nd degree of the scale(D) would give you a D Dorian scale. Which by itself is very minor sounding. But what happens when you start from the second degree of a C Minor scale? Is that scale now a D Dorian Minor scale/mode? _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." - Charlie Parker |

D Dorian is related to C Ionian, because neither of them have accidentals (sharps and flats). If the C minor scale has 2 flats, it's a C Dorian, related to Bb Ionian.
All this stuff can drive you crazy. For me, D Dorian is playing the C major scale, but D is my root, A is my 5th and F is my 3rd. |

Your standard Cmin would have 3 flats, and be based on the Eb Ionian, C Aeolian mode. Starting 3 flats starting on D would be Locrian, with I being a diminished. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

So if you start on D in a C natural minor scale, the spaces being H, H, W, H, H, W, W (D, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D) That makes that scale a what? I guess I'm confused or maybe I worded the question weird. _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." - Charlie Parker |

D Locrian. Think of it as Eb, starting on VII. _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

Oh alright. Thinking about it like that makes a lot more sense. Thanks Lane! _________________ "If you don't live it, it won't come out of your horn." - Charlie Parker |
