Topic: What Guitar Was Jimmy Day Using ?? |

If Bobby Garrett got the first Sho-Bud and Buddy Emmons was still playing a 1000; what was Jimmy Day playing before he got his Blue Darlin' ??
I've found this gap in my chronology and don't have a answer even though I stood along side both Bobby and Jimmy when they would switch gigs with Jim Reeves. I was too lost in what Jimmy was playing to even notice the guitar. I do know he was using the same Fender Pro amp that Bobby had used and told me it was Jimmy's. The amp with the missing grill cloth revealing that big 15 inch speaker.
He would play a George Jones lick so I asked him, between songs; if he had recorded with George and he said " Oh, yeah !!" Then I heard a Ray Price lick and I again asked him and he replied the same. I asked him (This was the first time I met him...): Who are you and he said his name which I had never heard of before that. That was the beginning
of my quest for PSG knowledge. Guitars and amps were still side issues as the music is what got my attention: How did they do that ?? I'm still searching for things I missed......

Paul, Bobby Garrett didn't get the first Sho-Bud.As a matter of fact, He was pretty far down the line, it was the first D-10 string though. I still have a picture of it that Bobby sent me in 1958.
What a guy he was. |

Herb, it was a Shot Jackson pedal. Rick Garrett brought it by the store (the Fender) and it was still in very good shape. He bought it from the Jim Reeves foundation last year. This was the guitar that I first saw Bobby play in '67. It was his last guitar before the Sho-Bud ten string.
Bobby sounded so great on the fender too!

Bobbe; Herb and Chas: Thanks for the info and filling that void between my ears. I've posted this before Bobbe; but speaking of C6th: JR came over to Bobbe as I was standing off his tuning keys and said what I heard very clearly: Get off those pedals and play some Byrd. If I'd have closed my eyes, I would have sworn Jerry was there himself. Yes !! He surely did know C6th !!
BTW Sometime back you asked if anyone needed some string(s). I replied I needed some string for a 120 vol pedal. Got any ??

Yes Paul, we have the correct string (cord) for the goodrich volume pedals.

the 1st Bud? guess it went to Don Warden, Ben Keith was 3rd in line(?)

| Yes Andy! here we go again! I try real hard to stay out of this subject on the forum, as there are so many different opinions, regarding who got which guitar & when! I know for sure that Don Warden did get the 1st one, but due to the fact that it was a single neck , with 1 pedal, Its not counted in the double neck category! Here's my story! In 1957 I was at Shots garage in Madison, & Shot introduced me to Buddy & said to him, Pick out a nice piece of wood for Al as he's getting #3 I do know that Ben Keith & Bobby Garrett got their guitars sometime later! Sorry if I ruffled any feathers! Its always been my understanding, that Jimmy Day got #1 & Buddy got#2 au |

Another "what I heard"
Shot was working for Roy Acuff at the time and he(RA)helped $$$wise to get Sho-Bud started.
FWIW I saw Don Warden's single neck in the Roy A. museum and was listed as #1,or the first Sho-Bud,don't remember.
Al,you said {Jimmy Day got #1},you were refering to double necks right?

If anyone cares to know the facts on the first four Sho-Buds, e-mail me as it seems to do no good to post facts here. I don't have opinions on this subject,I have the facts. I learned them the hard way , about three years ago on this forum and it cost me my entire Buddy Emmons record collection and a wife. I sure miss the record collection!(Wives are easy to get) I thought I had it right but I had Sho-Bud number's 2 and 3 reversed. I know now. Thanks to Buddy, Lynn, Jimmy and Ben Keith Shauffle. Ben came by the store and signed #2 that was actually the first double.
As I stated before, I won't post these facts here. Not worth arguing over.
