I've been getting the urge to play jazz steel again. I recently cut this old Bud Powell tune in the studio with some local musicians. It was supposed to be two guitars, bass and drums, but after tracking it, I decided to recut my part on steel instead of guitar, just for fun.
I probably won't be playing steel on the final recording, but I thought maybe some folks here might dig the steel guitar version. It's fun to play, but a real exercise in bar movement and blocking.

Fantastic! I, too, am getting back into steel guitar and doing jazz. I've had 25 years away from the steel, so I'm rusty as all get out. Glad to hear what you've done; it gives me something to aspire to.

Thanks, Jim. I'm looking forward to your new jazz CD!
Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement.
The original concept for the studio session was for two (standard) guitars doing jazz tunes with harmony voicings, with a particular sound in mind. This is to promote a group I'm playing guitar in, along with another guitarist. Since I had all the tracks from the session, I decided to record this "alternate" track at home, with the steel replacing my guitar part. I did it as an exercise toward getting back to playing more jazz steel (and for the amusement of SGF friends), but I'm half-tempted to pitch it to the group and see if they might want to keep it. Of course, that means I'd have to play it live, along with a bunch of other difficult bop tunes, which is another thing altogether. |

Bud's tunes are often neglected - what a great tune call, and great playing! I'd leave in the steel, although I'm sure it would be great either way. _________________ Christopher Woitach
