Topic: Rusler engine turned end plates |

I found a 69 Rusler SD12 . Cool peacock color body, lots of mop inlay, nice shape. The end plates need polishing. Other than being careful with any abrasive polishing compound, does anyone have a special technique to clean up the endplates without damaging the engine turned pattern?

About all you can do without disturbing the pattern is clean them with something like acetone. Polish will get down in the swirls and it's hard to get out. Any buffing, polishing you try to do might mar the jeweling.
Are they scratched and grooved up or just dull?
Maybe one of those new colorless spray spritz polishes would work. |

Well,,,, I searched and searched the web. Here's a quote from a guy who asked an expert on how to do engine-turning.
" He also recommended polishing the piece before engine turning it, because you can’t polish it afterwards. Eamonn is very knowledgeable about engine turning and his work is unbelievable. "
If I had something to experiment on, I'd try this. I'd use the deoxidizer, then dab the polish on with a soft brush, like a shoeshine brush. After letting it dry completely, I'd use another soft brush to gently sweep of the dry, powdered polish. There's really no rubbing with this polish, so that might work. I wish I had a piece to try it on! Read what they say about it.

I can polish a totally oxidized endplate to it's most highly achievable polished state in less than 5 minutes. Good stuff. Still wish I could experiment on something though, cuz things like this spark my curiosity!

Thanks. "Polishing" was a poor choice of words. I meant to find out if re turning an existing swirl could clean it up a little. The rear apron is like new,but the right front corner is scratched to the point that it really stands out. Thanks for the info. I've got some scrap to experiment on, but I'm thinking I'll have to clean it and leave it as is.

I might try some of that Purple polish on my Marlen endplates though, looks like it works well.
