we move to a house next week and i'd like to have all my guitars in the attic.
now is my question: is there an issue with temperature and humidity??
during the summer month it's possible to have temperatures up to 100°f and during the winter month maybe only 60°f.
will this cause problems for my vintage steels??
maybe i could control and regulate the humidity with ext. devices or so.
what do you guys do especially in the south of usa?
cheers from germany
guido

Put the clothes in the attic and the guitars in the closet

The attic would generate enough heat here in the South to totally wreck a guitar. A place in the house such as a closet or under the bed would be sooooo much better.

If there is much humidity at all dont put the guitars in the attic the heat will hurt and warp them but along with humidity it will really mess them up so I strongly advise you do something else because they could be badly damaged.

I just went back and saw where you mentioned southern part of the US I live in Mississippi and just about anything you put in the attic is usually bothered by the humidity and heat

If the outside temperature reaches 100, then your attic will easily be 20-40 degrees hotter. Attics, garages, sheds, utility trailers, and car trunks are generally the worst places you could choose to store instruments.

Avoid basements and attics. Under a bed in a controlled environment living space (guest room) is good, or an INTERIOR closet (not against an outside wall).
In New England this is what I want:
Summer: dry and cool,
Winter: warm and slightly humidified.

When the heat goes on,(for the season) take measures to prevent excessive drying.

When the heat goes off, take measures to prevent mold/mildew.

Avoid thermal shock with Lacquer guitars.

Take care of your stuff, and your stuff will take care of you.

My 2 Cents...
Just loosen the strings...store it in the case. If you decide to bring it out of the mothballs, give it a few days to acclimate to the environment its in. Its not really feasible to utilize humidifier devices like we do with our acoustics, which can be much more critically affected by climate change..ie: Fingerboards warping, shrinking, fret edges being exposed...etc..I had this discussion just a few months ago with another individual in your situation.
Last year I had a Mullen PRP sent to me that had been stored for 21 years in a pawn shop storage facility, with no enviro system...I restrung it, lubed it, tightened all the tuners etc.....Away she went...Stayed in tune like it was new after 48 hours of acclimation to the TX humidity...This is not to say that there will not be exceptions...But I think the steel guitar is much more resilient to the forces of nature, as long as she has a chance to adjust....
The biggest threat to most musical instruments..(like humans)...Is Shock...Break it to her gently.... Wink

ok - thanks for all your tips and experiences!!
i'll choose another room with the lowest changes of temperature und "normal" living room humidity to put my guitars in!
the attic just could have been a nice place to have a music and guitar room, cause there's much space and it's well built even like a living room - just under the roof!!
then my wife will have only one room to put her shoes in! Laughing
and i claim another room for my musical stuff! i'd like to know my beauties save and in a good condition!
and i think all you guys are right!!!

Yeah, just joking,
take good care of your darlings!
The attic makes a perfect shoe(show)room, pumps and sneakers are much more forgiving....
Give me a call and let`s meet eventually when you guys have settled in your new home!

best wishes...
Pit
