Our Gospel group is making a CD starting Thursday night. Could some of you forumites with recording experience, give me suggestions on where to mic my LTD 400 please? I have a Beta 57A I was going to mic my amp with. But Bill, our guitar player and owner of the studio has several different mics, an SM 57 being one. Where do I need to point the mic? I've heard the center of speaker, and I heard the outer edge of the speaker. I'm also going to make a steel guitar/dobro instrumental CD so any help will be much appreciated.

Terry, the 57 is a fine mic, very popular and time proven.. but remember there is history but no rules..The Beta57 may very well be the mic you like, try it..
Placement..6 inches or so from the speaker center to the outer edge. try each location, listen..find the location you all like and lock it down...
For your Dobro, certainly try a Large Diaphragm Condenser , certainly a hi end or mid point such as a Shure KSM ..but if $$ are important, and they always are, a $100 MXL can do the trick. Again..mic on a boom stand with a shock mount, placement maybe 6 inches above the Dobro over the resonator..Move the mic and listen, you will find the sweet spot....
Here's a tip..use a keyboard stand for the Dobro, this will eliminate physical noises from trying to hold the Dobro...
I just did a session where we used the Shure KSM and the on board Schatten RG-03 reso pup..quite surprising results...The Schatten offered a very nice smooth sound mixed with the Condenser...
good luck

Terry, ask if they have a Sennheiser 421...many times that is what you are hearing on the steel guitar on records...57 is great too!
Ask about a ribbon mike too...if they have a Royer(I think the number is R-121)try that...very detailed...it really brings the growl out!
Have fun! |
