We went to see Connie Smith and her band, The Sundowners, at The Tarheel Variety Theater in Chocowinity, N. C. Saturday night. WOW! Country Music is alive and living VERY WELL. Gary Carter was unbelievable. He and Ricky Wright were very good together. This is a show all steel players should see. |

Gary is one my favorite players at the moment. He plays with good taste, perfect intonation and knows when not to play. He fills pockets without to much playing and gets out. Excellent player. |

Here's a great link to a really good performance from Gary. Sounds like Marty Stewart playing mandolin.

Billy, you and I would get along famously. Great observation. He plays professionally and doesn't fill up every nook and cranny. |

Since I discovered Gary, I am driven to give a look/listen to his Lighthouse song every so often. Every time I see something new. One time it can be Gary's right hand, how accurately it picks and blocks, the next time it might be his left foot, the accurate, concise attack on the pedals. It is just a joy to watch Gary in action. There is a bunch of learning in this video!
The Zum also gets a great chance to prove what a beautiful sounding instrument it really is. _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Howard posted a comment concerning the mandolin playing. After listening to the video of 'The Lighthouse Tale' I also listened to the original recording by the group, 'Nickel Creek'(Chris Thile on mandolin). It appears that Gary is playing to that track with the steel guitar substituting for the vocal parts. |
