I got a problem. Once my LTD gets warm, it starts roaring white noise and popping. Volume knob has no effect, which makes me think power section. Have I probably lost a component, or would it do any good to look for something loose? _________________ 2 pedal steels, a lapStrat, and an 8-string Dobro (and 3 ukes)

probably a hairline fracture in a solder joint somewhere. This is the demise of most wave soldered musical equipment - this construction technique is not well suited for heat, but if the amp was hand built and capable of handling heat for a long operating lifespan it would be much more expensive
If you are able to, pull the circuit card and check for cracks. Usually you find them around input and output jacks, potentiometers, and ribbon cable assemblies.
If there are high heat components you may find that they have melted the solder around their leads on the circuit board (this is more of a problem with modern Fender amps) _________________ Milkmansound.com |

Session 400 limited or LTD 400? Worked on many, seen very few cold solder joints, still that is one possible. Could very well be a noisy transistor, a bad cap or other things. I would never make a definitive analysis of what a problem is without testing it on the bench.
If an LTD 400 you can unplug the preamp form the power board (Molex connector) and check to see where the noise is coming from. If a Session 400 limited you can break the pre amp to power amp path by inserting a 1/4" jack in into the power amp input jack on the front. |
