The spectrum of music is still very broad today, as it was yesterday. But probaly not in the charts or on mainstream radio. From today's perspective I can't believe how a subtle melody like the one in "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" or even the rustic Blues "On The Road Again" could have ever made it to the top twenty.

Any human with ears that has followed music at all for the last 40-50 years already figured this out without the time series analysis - the interesting part of the work is the analysis methodology, not the conclusion, which is obvious. Of course, he's talking about mainstream pop music - I'm pretty sure that's what's in the 'million-song database' being used for the analysis. It may seem incongruous as a musician, but I don't think much of anything else is even on the radar for most people. |

Barry - it was my title. Any guitar forum in which a lot of people consider the idea that presenting graphs of frequency spectra of guitars to be controversial, overly technical, or even inappropriate is probably not gonna be real interested in anything entitled "Research".
On the other hand, when you put something that a lot of (if not most) members already agree with in the title ("Music today - bland but louder"), you're sure to get more response. |

Mainstream pop and rock, as well as much of the country music, is just a "drone". No "space", no "air", no break from the thruuuuuummmmmmmm of a bass guitar with endless sustain and a solid curtain of other noise.
Listening to "Don'T Know Why", and then listening to most any song that gets regular airplay plainly illustrates the yin and yang of music.  |
