Epiphone Broadway archtop guitar.
Unfortunately, I can't make out the entire serial no. on the inside label only the last four digits: 5262. Due to the fact there headstock flower made its appearance in 1951 and the truss rod covers entered in 1952, I believe the guitar is a 1951 or early 1952 built instrument in which case the first digit fo the serial nubmer is most likely a 6.
It has a spruce top, curly maple back and sides, a 3-piece maple/mahogany neck, a 20-fret bound-rosewood fretboard, and genuine mother-of-pearl-block inlays. I do not think the binding is original and there is a loose section from the bout to the tailpiece which needs re-gluing. Other features include a bound headstock (some checking ) with a single flower inlay , a bound-tortoiseshell pickguard, a rosewood-based bridge, and a Frequensator tailpiece. I would say this guitar is in B- condition, but neck is straight and there are no buzzes. Plays well and sounds good. There looks to have been some work done on the top from side of the guitar near the F-hole. See photos. $2375 shipped or BEST OFFER. | Steve, I'd bet your guitar is worth more than you are asking. These classics really go high in some markets. It appears to be in nice condition too. As the saying goes, if I needed a guitar, I'd grab it. |

Nice looking Epi.
A couple of questions, please.
Binding deterioration is pretty much the norm on early Epiphone archtops. And that's OK. However, if there have been binding repairs, to what extent has any overspray been done, if any? I ask that also because the guitar appears to have a remarkable lack of checking in the finish on it's body, too.
I believe that perhaps the bridge might be a replacement. Older Epi bridges have a single-foot base and the guitar's serial number is stamped on the underside of that (as well, of course, as being printed on the inside label). It APPEARS the bridge is a generic replacement, although I could be wrong.
The case is older but might not be original. Pre-war cases are generally black although striped tweed can be found on some. What I believe you have with this guitar is a very desirable brown Lifton-labeled case from the 50s to early 60's.
The strap pin has been added to the neck heel. |

| I think you can see the Epiphone "e" on the inside top of the case. It's not a pre-war case because the guitar probably dates to the early fifties. It is abeautiful guitar at a fair price but it is not pre-war. |

Ken, Jim, Eric and Carty, thanks for you comments, which I have found very helpful. No binding overspray but I'll bet this guitar was refinished at one time and done very well. There is some overspray on the back of the headstock.
I wish I could read the first letter or number of the serial number on the inside of the guitar.
Eric, when I get back to the USA June 15th I will check the serial number you say might be under the bridge. stevet

| For this quality and style guitar, I'd use a neck mounted pickup like a Johnny Smith. Mount the control and connection on the pickguard. This leaves the spruce top unaffected. A Kent Armstrong pickup would be great. |
